Feed safety & shelf life: five questions put to a scientist


Research conducted by Trouw Nutrition shows that it’s possible to deliver a higher level of feed safety and nutrition while protecting producers’ feed investment. A synergistic combination of ingredients goes beyond conventional propionic acid to extend shelf life, optimise the moisture profile of feeds, and defend them against common moulds.

Trouw Nutrition, a Nutreco company, partners with feed com- panies to meet all three challenges. Recently, the company de- veloped a patent-pending activated propionic acid technology,

which it implemented in its Fylax Forte-HC liquid additive. The technology has been proven to increase the effectiveness of single propionic acid when combined with a phytochemical in- gredient, emulsifier and buffering agent. Its synergistic compo- nents help producers remain competitive in their markets while producing feed with an optimal moisture content and high nu- tritional value. Below, Dr Prince Nanda, Global Product Manag- er, Fylax & Fysal at Trouw Nutrition discusses the science that underlies ActiProp’s efficacy in supporting safe, high-quality feed while respecting the economics of production.


What need in the market led to the development of this technology? Dr Nanda: Shelf life is an enduring challenge as there is in- creased pressure to remain cost competitive while maintaining the highest feed quality. Uncertainty due to climate change, a disrupted/stressed supply chain, and the pandemic present yet more challenges for high-quality feed and adequate shelf life. We sought a next-level solution for producing high-quality feed that goes beyond any single ingredient treatment.


How is ActiProp more effective than single or buffered ingredients? Dr Nanda: Many organic acids are effective against one type of pathogen. Combining different organic acids usually leads to an additive effect (1+1 =2). In our journey to find a solu- tion that would deliver an accelerated effect, we sought a so- called ‘1+1=3, or perhaps even 4’ solution. We tested various combinations of different ingredients and after running vali- dation and efficacy tests, we came to a powerful solution, that has this desired effect (Figure 1).

How is the synergistic effect achieved? Dr Nanda: ActiProp increases the porosity of moulds’ cell walls, while its components exert a destabilising effect on the cell membrane. As this effect supports better accessibility of organic acids, the cell’s internal pH decreases, inhibiting its growth and eventually killing the mould cell. This mode of ac- tion is driven by the synergy of four key components delivered in the most effective quantities: 1. Propionic acid A highly effective broad-spectrum organic acid that attacks moulds 2. A buffering agent This reduces evaporation and the corrosive nature of the
