Cranberry by-products as a feed supplement for broilers

A study investigated the immunomodulatory actions of feed supplemented with cranberry by-products in broilers. Broiler Cobb 500 chicks were fed a control basal diet, a basal diet sup- plemented with bacitracin (BACI, 55 ppm), cranberry pomace at 1% (CP1) and cranberry pomace at 2% (CP2) or cranberry pomace eth- anolic extract at 150 (COH150) and 300 ppm (COH300) for 30 days. Blood sera were ana- lysed at days 21 and 28 of age to establish im- munoglobulin levels. At day 21, the highest IgY level was found in the blood serum in the birds supplemented with cranberry pomace fed at 2%. In the liver, 13 of the 22 differentially expressed genes were downregulated across all treatments compared to control. In the bur- sa, 5 of 9 genes associated with innate immu- nity were differentially expressed. The expres- sion of the anti-inflammatory interleukin-10 (IL-10) gene was upregulated in all treatment

groups in bursa compared to control. The ex- pression of transferrin gene was significantly upregulated in the livers of birds fed COH300, and in the bursa of birds fed BACI; these results indicate organ-dependent modulation of this gene in broilers. The results of this study show that feed supplementation with cranberry products modulates the innate-immune response and suppressed pro-inflammatory cytokines in broilers.

Insect farming company Ÿnsect has extended its Series C funding to US $ 372 million. The company will use the money raised to build the largest insect farm in the world in the city of Amiens in France. The farm, which will be com- pleted in 2022, will produce 100,000 tons of in- sect products annually, as well as create 500 jobs. This is the first time the company has got the support of US-based investors, which will al- low Ÿnsect to expand beyond Europe and Asia into the United States and grow its markets to inlcude the supply of wet pet food. Antoine Hubert, Ÿnsect’s co-founder, president and CEO, states that their ambition is to revolutionise the food chain: “ Ÿnsect isn’t just about insect farm- ing: with climate change and populations in- creasing worldwide, we need to produce more food with less available land and fewer resourc- es. We believe that Ÿnsect can play a pivotal role in providing such a global solution.”
