Danny Williams | Executive Director of Transportation
Wilson County Schools, North Carolina
was the last North Johnston High School student allowed by North Carolina state law to drive a school bus. That was in 2005. Since then, his tenure in school transportation has included various positions, the most recent being the executive director of transportation of Wilson County Schools east of Raleigh. He is thought to bethe youngest director in the state. Nominated by five members of the school district, Williams is described as a leader with strong work
ethics and great relationship building skills. Brittany Dublin, a principal in Wilson County, said Williams is only one call away, and he goes above and beyond for all stakeholders. “As a new principal myself, I have a big vision for my new school including a community bus ride for my staff,” she said.
“When asking Danny if this was possible, not only did he share that he backed my idea 100 percent, [but he also] told me that he would drive my staff on the bus ride himself.” Another principal, Emily Chilton, said Williams makes it a priority to build strong relationships with school building administrators while restructuring the district transportation’s department. “He has worked diligently to implement clear, consistent and concise processes and procedures,” she said. Williams said last year he focused on two major projects, the
first being a complete overhaul and upgrade of cameras systems on every bus. The second was the installation of two-way radios on all the buses for faster communication. But his favorite project to date, is building morale and culture of the transportation department. “My goals moving forward are to gradually increase driver
[and] monitor pay to become more competitive with our surrounding school districts,” he shared. “One of my goals in terms of growth is to continue to grow as a leader and to continue to provide more in-depth knowledge and exemplary customer service to all stakeholders.” He noted that his favorite part of the job is interacting with
the students. Williams shared that he loves riding the bus and listening to students talk about their day and their favorite part of the bus ride.
