94% of transportation directors/supervisors said they feel the school bus is an extension of the classroom. (Out of 70 responses.)

72% of transportation directors/supervisors stated they didn’t apply for FCC Emergency Con- nectivity Funds for school bus Wi-Fi hotspots. (Out of 69 responses.)

subways have Wi-Fi access and ques- tioned why that same luxury isn’t offered to schoolchildren on yellow buses. “In school buses, where our students spend even on the shortest route say 20 minutes per trip, that’s 40 minutes a day,” she said, extrapolating that over to three hours a week or an an extra 7,200 minutes per school year. “That’s 120 hours extra a year of potential extended learning time, which equals over four weeks of school. Minutes make mo- ments, make hours, make days, make a difference.”

Running Into Coverage Issues Despite 72 percent of respondents to

a recent STN magazine survey citing that they have either great or good cell coverage, 27 percent of respondents stated that the lack of cell coverage

on district routes was a reason for not installing school bus Wi-Fi. Kajeet’s Flood explained that the

company offers three major options for installing Wi-Fi on school buses, which cover a diverse range of district needs. First is its traditional single carrier con- nection, which is what most districts go with, Flood said. The company also offers its SmartBus 5G solution, which takes advantage of the latest 5G tech- nology. But that is more expensive. The third option is most applicable

in rural areas, which is the multi-car- rier SmartBus with Dual Connect. He explained that two different carriers are added on every bus. A the vehicle travels in and out of different coverage territories on the longer routes, the sys- tem will automatically connect to the best coverage.
