Halley: STA works with a variety of OEMs such as

Lion, Thomas Bus, Blue Bird and Navistar/IC to bring their products into our fleet. Regarding charging partners and electric utility partners, we are currently evaluating several companies and testing different products and services to determine the best fit for our operations. Since our company operates in both the U.S. and Canada, we have a large footprint, and different companies bring different strengths to different regions. We are seeing very good acceptance, and we are in discussions with several districts about implementing EVs into their fleets. Some districts have requirements that make it easier to implement, while some have requirements that make it more challenging to become an early adopter of this technology. We work through the unique needs of each district and develop a short-term, medium-term and long-term plan for electrification.

STN: Partnership was a big point of discussion during

the opening session at ACT Expo last month. One of the panelists from Shell said partnerships should begin by asking what a win for the potential partner and their

customers look like, then set out on risk-balancing. What is important to STA’s customers in terms of defining a “win” when it comes to electrification?

Halley: Having a successful, sustainable program is paramount with EVs, and you do not do it alone or in a vacuum. You must have the support of the community, the district and the suppliers. It really involves everyone who touches the EV in some manner, including the students riding the electric bus. For STA, a win is defined as everyone working together

toward a common and attainable goal. Don’t set the finish line, as it will change as the project matures. If you think you will be successful at a small number of buses, that is where it will end. This is a long-term commitment that requires a vision for the future. It will require us to stretch our abilities to see what we can achieve.

STN: The 2022 State of Sustainable Fleets Report

released at ACT Expo finds that government incentives are still driving much of the electric zero-emissions projects. What is STA looking at in terms of a tipping point when electric makes sense to school districts as a
