they would actually want to, because if they do it on the bus they wouldn’t have to do at home,” Lefford said, adding that the longest activity trip is up to three hours one way. As an honor student, she said she finds herself often awake till one in the morning trying to finish homework.
She noted that at first, she and Waters were going to
advocate to put the Wi-Fi hotspots only on activity trips but decided that all students should be afforded the opportunity, especially since 26 of the district’s routes are over 30 minutes long. “Many [peers] thought that it would be a great idea, especially the student athletes and the people that are involved in clubs because they get so behind, and they’ll be up late after they get home just to get an assignment done,” Lefford explained. The district applied to the ECF to make the student’s
project a reality. Beginning this summer, all buses will be equipped with Wi-Fi hotspots. “This was a perfect example of two students totally coming up with an idea on their own,” Sites said. “Getting it put together, pre- senting it, getting the school to approve it, and bettering the school community.” Besides the longer athletic trips, Wi-Fi equipped school buses provide students an extra 15 to 20 minutes to study for an upcoming exam, Premier Wireless’ Bogle noted, adding that most kids probably don’t study for an hour. “Maybe all they need is five minutes to upload home-
