WE REALLY DO MEAN

FULL SERVICE

With radiators, DPFs, EGRs and more than 30,000 exhaust parts, it’s no wonder Auto-jet is the choice of school bus systems coast to coast.

Carina Noble addresses NSTA members. She took the office of president last July and is embarking on her second year with the gavel.

Noble: The supply chain is-

sues are difficult, but because the school bus industry is methodical and generally not over-reactive, we continue to do a great job providing safe and efficient trans- portation. The most difficult part of the supply chain issue is the infla- tion of prices, and most consumers only think of the obvious things like fuel. However, we are seeing costs on most everything escalate. For example, in this current en- vironment, buses cost 20 percent more than last year, so therefore they have a higher value, and this causes insurance rates to rise, also up about 20 percent. Things like tires, hoses and lubricants are all made from oil, so those prices have increased as well. All these pres- sures add to our greatest supply issue, and that’s the driver short- age, which continues to impact us. The good news is that small-, medium- and large-sized fleets all have their advantages, and they continue to dig in to get through these tough times.

STN: A noticeable emergence

over the past several years has been non-yellow bus providers that are contracting with school districts to transport students. What is NSTA’s stance on these companies, when school buses are not always avail- able or feasible for transporting certain populations of students but these other student transportation providers can? Noble: Without question, school buses remain the safest way for kids to get to school. Yellow bus transportation is the most regulat- ed form of transportation to school and is green in that each school bus takes around 36 cars off the road. Our goal is to get as many kids into yellow buses as possi- ble. We understand the need for some flexibility on certain long or low-student rider routes but again, with safety at the forefront of all we do, we are concerned with student transportation options that are not as regulated or safety-focused as the yellow bus. It certainly is an issue we continue to monitor and discuss.
