way to that event, and then they may be working on their homework on the way home from that event.” Flood said the amount of time that
students spend on the school bus can equate to additional learning opportunites throughout the course of a school year. “When you talk to a superintendent and you say, if I could give you another 20 instructional days’ worth of time for your students, would that be valuable? start researching school bus Wi-Fi for academic purposes, there are several other benefits. “We see disciplinary issues dramatically decrease,” Flood explained. “When students are work- ing on their devices, they’re not running up and down the aisle, get- ting in fights, etc.”
Directly Impacting Students Two high student athletes in Arkansas
researched the benefits of school bus Wi-Fi and advocated for the technology to be installed on all 47 of their district’s school buses. “We do a lot of traveling outside of the school and thought about getting Wi-Fi on the buses while going back and forth to the games,” explained Ethan Waters, a 10th-grader who plays on the Beebe High School football team northwest of Little Rock, Arkansas. He and friend Jordyn Lefford are a
part of the Education Accelerated by Service and Technology (EAST) Initia- tive, which is a Beebe School District program that provides professional development to students that focuses on integrating technology into any classroom, in this case a mobile one. Lefford, a 9th grader who plays softball and basketball, explained that once she and Waters presented the idea to EAST Facilitator Joy Sites, they had to make the
