T

hirst for revenge is a key ingredient in many a horror tale and one that writer P M Buchan has placed front and centre in his new, serialized web comic. The story of a man who turns to the occult in order to take vengeance against those who killed his son and crippled his wife, Blood Moon is more than a simple revenge thriller.

“I’m calling it contemporary British folk-horror set in isolated Cornwall on the eve of the UK’s divisive Brexit referendum, but co-creator John Pearson has a simpler take on it,” says Buchan. “He came up with the tagline, ‘What cost, re- venge?’ I’m crazy about that trope of the super- natural revenge-thriller, where the main char- acter has the thing they love most taken from them, and their response is to give themselves to vengeance.”

While camping at a music festival, lapsed Christian punk musician Owen and his family are run over by a gang of partying youths. Ow- en’s son, Harley, is killed instantly, and his wife, Maura, severely injured. Distraught, frustrated with the police’s inaction, and overwhelmed with

having to care for his autistic daugh- ter on his own, Owen is desperate for some supernatural succour. He turns to Maura’s “sisters” – a coven of witches – for help. Unwilling to satisfy Owen’s pleas to resurrect Harley, a mysterious woman steps in to offer the grieving father an al- ternative: deadly (and otherworldly) vengeance on his son’s killers. But is Owen willing to pay the high cost for such a transaction?

“He’s already haunted by an ear- ly promise that never amounted to anything,” explains Buchan. “He’s brimming with all of this impotent rage and resentment, at everything he thought he was owed, at all the opportunities he squandered. I want readers to see how far Owen is will- ing to go for vengeance and what it does to the people closest to him.” Owen’s pre-existing anger is a key part of the story and brings him into direct conflict with Maura’s coven when it appears to turn its back on him. His rage towards the women, and his apparent neglect of his daughter, underline an ongoing struggle between the sexes, albeit with a supernatural twist.

Blood Moon: Contemporary British folk-horror set on the eve of Brexit.

“The tension between Owen and the witches comes from a concept that has al- ways resonated with me,” says Buchan, “the idea that magic, breaking the laws of nature, comes with a blood price. Which means that women who bleed every month are born with an innate power that’s denied to men. A man can only access that kind of power if he’s willing to spill blood. To me, that captures everything about the power dynamic between men and women in modern society. “I don’t want Blood Moon to be defined by the dichotomy between the men and women,” he adds, “but there’s no denying that this is a story where I wanted to hold up a candle to everything I feel about fatherhood, my frustrations as a fa-

ther and a husband and a son. I don’t think Owen is the hero, or even the protagonist, and as the story progresses I hope people will empathize with the full cast of characters, but ultimately it’s not for me or John to decide what the story is about. All we can do is try to be honest, to set these characters on their paths, knowing that they want conflicting things and not all of them will succeed, or even survive the journey.”
