Right and below The aim of The New Horizons Project is for children from all walks of life to know that sailing is a sport for them.

ringing together communities by making watersports accessible to them is what The New Horizons Project
is about. Returning for its third consecutive year, the project is currently operating at the All Aboard Watersports Centre in Bristol, connecting local young people aged 10–20 with the world of sailing through work with local community groups, educators and organisations.
Participating in previous years’ projects, Black to Nature is a community group that campaigns for equal access to nature, with a particular focus on visibly minority ethnic communities who are currently excluded from the countryside. Its senior equality, diversity and inclusion manager, Lily Khandker, says, ‘We jumped at the opportunity to be involved. I’m a Bristolian. I’ve always passed here, but I never knew, until The New Horizons Project, that there was
actually a chance for the children to come here.’ This inspiring initiative has hosted both subsidised and free introductions to sailing sessions in the Bristol area through existing partnerships. Rob Howlett, RYA South-West Regional Manager, and organiser of the project, explains that they found sailing clubs already working with their local communities, ‘so we gained access to fantastic groups that already had a passion for the water and the outdoors’.
Life skills
The project has introduced children to on-the-water opportunities they were previously unaware of, fostering a sense of adventure and exploration. Benefits for the children and their families are not only discovering a love of being on the water, but also advancing their self-development and confidence. ‘They’re doing something outside their normality. I can see how the skills they’re learning are going to be with them for life,’ says Lily.
Left Trying something new can often be challenging, but in a positive way.
