CEO REFLECTIONS

Wherever, whenever

Globally and locally, water is for everyone, says CEO Sara Sutcliffe

N

ow winter is here, many of you will be winterising boats and

planning repairs or upgrades. But I’m always heartened to hear of sailors still getting out on the water during cold months, taking part in a winter series or cruising and making the most of quieter marinas and harbours. It’s the diverse ways in

which anyone can enjoy the ˕˘˘Ѓ˧˦ ˙ ˕˘˜˚ ˧˛˘ water that underpin our strategic vision of Together on Water. However, wherever, whenever, the water is there to be enjoyed by everyone. Boats can create a level

ˣ˔˜˚ Ѓ˘˗ ˔˗ ˣ˥˩˜˗˘ a sense of freedom particularly for people with disabilities. I’m encouraged to hear how many clubs are integrating Sailability programmes into their wider club activities (see our feature on p26). Not enough blind and partially sighted people, in particular, realise

sailing could be for them. Our new programme, See Sailing Your Way, launched in November, will make it even ˘˔˦˜˘˥ ˙˥ ˧˛˘ˠ ˧ ˚˘˧ ˔Є˔˧ʡ Our target is to provide more places for people to sail where they can learn the necessary skills with ˖Ѓ˗˘˖˘ʡ At the World Sailing Annual

Conference I attended in November there was an increased focus on environmental and inclusivity issues. First, the water is what connects us and we need to be protecting it. Second, inclusivity is important for every country – everyone agrees we must all do more to stay relevant. Closer to home, the work of

the Clean Water Sports Alliance is making real headway championing water quality issues. In the coming weeks and months we have meetings with water companies, Water UK ˔˗ ˚˩˘˥ˠ˘˧ ˙Ѓ˖˜˔˦ ˧ continue to apply pressure for action. It’s your membership support that enables us, through revenue and critical mass of voices, to campaign on issues like these that we know are important to you. Thank you, your support is vital.

Anniversary Share your RYA

boating story Next year is the RYA’s 150th anniversary and we want to hear from you. We’re immensely proud of our

heritage, and this important milestone will give us the opportunity to celebrate all that being on the water and boating and watersports offers. As well as a great activity, it’s been proven that being on and by the water is good for our health and wellbeing. Whether walking along the coast or sailing your dinghy at an inland lake, being close to the water is a relaxing and restorative pastime. Extensive research has shown being around blue spaces can alleviate stress and anxiety, and lower our heart and breathing rate. So, we want to learn about your

experiences. As well as stories of how the RYA has helped your boating, inspire an adventure, or career on the water, we want to hear how your ˘˕˘˜˚ ˛˔˦ ˕˘˘Ѓ˧˘˗ʡ ˊ˘Ϡ˗ ˔˦ ˜˞˘ to hear if boating has been in your family for generations; maybe you can trace it back 150 years!

We love to hear from you. We’ll be

featuring stories on the special 150-year anniversary area of our website next year. Please email your story to the.editor@rya.org.uk
