to Torquay, and had planned to sail to Calais but the weather put paid to that. Eventually the wind relented and we were able to round the Dodman and return to the Helford, flushed with success but a little damp! Despite that we were married three

years later and lived and sailed in Cornwall for 20 blissful years. We are still together and still sailing. Mike and Nettie Palmer

Mike and Nettie are the winners of our Winter 2020 issue’s ‘Where in the World?’ competition. Your prize is on its way!

Mevagissey is just across St Austell Bay from our home port of Fowey. With the wind in the right direction, it’s a pleasant morning sail.

The fore and aft moorings have afforded me the most embarrassment – from struggling to row the inflatable back to the boat against the wind, to the enormous amusement of those sitting on benches on the quay on the far side, to asking the chap with the (single-

handed) OSTAR sweater on the next mooring why he hadn’t taken his wife with him. Mike Baker

Your ‘Where In The World?’ image just reinforces we do not have to travel far to get perfect views in working harbours. We thought it was in Cornwall because of the light and topography. We used our almanac, strangely under-used lately, to confirm our idea that it was Mevagissey. Our keel wouldn’t be welcome for a long stay here, but we feel we have shared it already. We love sailing from Swansea round the corner. Sue and Stuart Davies

I enjoyed many family holidays in Mevagissey. The most memorable event was on 11 August 1999 when shortly after 11am Mevagissey experienced two minutes of darkness during a total eclipse of the sun. A never-to-be-forgotten experience. Maureen Highfield-Sykes

the foreground is my pride and joy, Langkawi. I reckon the photo must have been taken about five years ago and that was our very first visit to Mevagissey after moving Langkawi from the Solent to the West Country. David M Evans

It was lovely to recognise Mevagissey as the harbour in the latest edition and of course seeing our Ovni,Toad, in the photograph. Mevagissey is a delightful, vibrant, typical Cornish fishing village in the lee of the Dodman. Many boats head from Falmouth to Fowey without exploring this gem. We haven’t been in to Mevagissey

very often as usually we are en route somewhere and anchor overnight to the south at Portmellon. Margot Schwarz
