RYA Cruising Conference heads online

Expert advice and inspiring talks at virtual event J

oin the RYA plus guest speakers and exhibitors online for this year’s Cruising Conference on Sunday 21

March. Talks from a range of speakers will cover cruising issues such as post- Brexit guidance and the latest safety developments. Our keynote speaker will be four-time Whitbread Round the World Race competitor Skip Novak (right), famed for his inspiring talks. ‘During these times when so many trips have been cancelled, I’m really looking forward to sharing my experiences with fellow cruisers,’ he says. Pre-recorded content in the exhibition area covers a range of subjects, including inland waterways, choosing the right rope and an introduction to radar.

‘We’re excited about the benefits an online event can offer, particularly pre-recorded content that will enable delegates to visit sessions that may have clashed at a live event,’ says RYA Cruising Manager Stuart Carruthers. ‘Being a virtual event also means delegates can join from across the globe, making it our most accessible conference yet.’ The exhibition area and on-demand talks are open from 9am to 2.30pm, with

live sessions running from 9.30am

to 12.30pm. Entry is free for RYA members and £10 for non-members.

Training for safeguarding T

RYA courses available for potential instructors and volunteers

wo RYA safeguarding courses offer invaluable knowledge for anyone interested in becoming a watersports

instructor or holding a role at an RYA- affiliated club or training centre working with children and/or vulnerable adults. The ‘Safe And Fun’ course offers a good understanding of safeguarding, how to recognise signs of abuse and

how to deal with it. This online course is equivalent to around three hours of classroom training, but you can do it at your own speed from home. The ‘Welfare Officer’ course is a higher-level course for anyone responsible for safeguarding children and/or vulnerable adults at their club, training centre or class association. It’s accredited by the Continuing Professional Development Standards Office and equates to three hours of continuing professional development. It’s a practical, interactive course with scenarios based on real situations and frequently asked questions.

For more information on either

course, contact the RYA’s safeguarding team on safeguarding@rya.org.uk or 023 8060 4226.

RYA Training Conference goes global

ore than 1,200 RYA instructors, appointment holders and training

centre principals joined our virtual RYA Raymarine Training Conference, supported by Gallagher, on 30-31 January. The new virtual format made

the event more accessible, attracting delegates from 40 different countries. The sessions and speakers covered subjects from sustainability and delivering virtual training to participation trends, challenges and future opportunities for RYA- recognised training centres. After a tough year, the

impact of the pandemic and Brexit were also hot topics, with RYA Chief Executive Sarah Treseder and RYA Director of Training and Qualifications Richard Falk thanking the RYA training network for their resilience and dedication. ‘Despite current challenges, the atmosphere was really positive and early feedback suggests the event was enjoyed by instructors and principals all over the world,’ said Richard. ‘Our thanks go to those who joined us, and speakers, exhibitors and our conference partners, Raymarine and Gallagher.’
