Plot an easier course with electronics

he way we navigate has changed dramatically in recent years, with many sail and motor boat users relying on electronic instruments as their primary navigation aid. There will always be a place for traditional navigation at sea, but a modern chart- plotter can make short work of the job, allowing you to plan, execute and monitor your passage on screen, with a wealth of additional data available at the touch of a button. But it’s vital to fully understand its use and benefits. Here are are some simple steps you can take to get the most out of your technology.
Q Get familiar with your system There’s no standard for how manufacturers collect, interpret and display information, so every chart plotter will work differently. Ensure you understand how the information will be displayed – an assumption based on a previous model could prove disastrous.
Q Always have a backup Make sure you have at least one other means of plotting or fixing your position and navigating safely, ideally on a system that will continue to work independently should your primary systems fail.
Q Get trained There are a number of RYA navigation courses for all levels of experience and ability. The RYA Day Skipper Shorebased course specifically covers electronic navigation, as well as chartwork and the basics of seamanship. Find out more on page 42 or visit
www.rya.org.uk/training.
Q Enhance your knowledge The Royal Institute of Navigation has released the booklet Electronic Navigation Systems: Guidance for Safe Use on Leisure Vessels, which is packed with advice for different systems. Written with input from the RYA and designed to complement our training courses, it’s free to download from
www.rin.org.uk.
