SPECIAL FOCUS: LEVELLING COMPOUNDS FIT FOR A KING

When a fast-setting levelling product, amongst other tiling solutions, were required for a historic renovation project, contractors turned to Palace Chemicals.

When Leicestershire-based World of Tiles were contracted to undertake a complex, historical tile project in Castle Donnington, their first choice of tiling products supplier was Liverpool-based Palace Chemicals.

The project saw the transformation of an 18th brought up to date in a striking remodelling.

century cottage

Having developed a strong working relationship with Palace Chemicals over the last 23 years, John Hambleton, company director at World of Tiles, knew that they could provide the quality products required to complete this job to the high standard required.

The project took one week to complete and saw a 16.5 sqm space revamped using Marazzi’s porcelain wood- effect tiles.

John Hambleton said: “We were approached by the owners of the cottage to replace the flooring in the hallway which came with a unique set of challenges for us as a team, partly due to its age.

“This tile installation went with the contour of the floor, but it took us two days to prepare the surface, which was primed with Palace Tilers Primer and levelled using Palace Fast-Flex Floor Leveller. We kept to our schedule due to the fast-setting properties of the leveller, which allowed us to commence the tiling installation the next day.”

Palace Tilers Primer was selected as it is a multi- purpose, co-polymer primer, bonding agent and sealer designed to improve adhesion strength and long-term durability of the bond between levelling compounds and tiling adhesives with the background substrate.

To ensure the surface was prepared to a standard suitable to lay the tiles, John chose to use Palace Fast-Flex Floor Leveller- a fast-setting, floor smoothing underlayment giving a consistently level screed up to 25mm thick.

Fast-Flex Floor Leveller’s built-in polymer allows application over a comprehensive range of floor surfaces, including mastic asphalt, plywood and dense impermeable surfaces and it can also be used to level over heated subfloors and under-tile wire mat systems.

On the steep slope of Bondgate, where the property in question is located, there are many important sub- medieval and later buildings, including the Grade II listed Baptist Chapel of 1774.

John said: “The properties located in Bondgate and Castle Donington are all unique and date back to various historical periods, meaning that any tiling installations need to consider uneven floors, which often slope between rooms.

“The tiling installations may be challenging, however using Palace products gives me the confidence knowing

there will be no problems and the projects will be completed on time to high standard.”

For the installation of the tiles, Palace Trade-Flex was the adhesive of choice, being a fast-setting polymer-reinforced adhesive for fixing over hard impermeable floors and heated substrates, making it perfect for this job.

The final look was completed using Palace Colour-Lock Grout in Latte, which was selected due to its premium performance and fast-setting properties. Palace Colour- Lock Grout is recommended when fixing tiles in frequently used locations and overheated sub-floors.

John added: “When I first set up the business in 1990, Palace Chemicals were a great help, letting me buy products in smaller quantities when I didn’t initially need full pallets – the only supplier that would do this at the time!

“We’ve built a great relationship with them ever since. With Palace Chemicals, I know the service is excellent as well as the products.”

Simon Clough, Sales Director at Palace Chemicals, said: “Palace Chemicals is always keen to support small businesses and it’s great to know that a business who used to buy small quantities from us in the early days, is now hugely successful and is consistently buying from us on a monthly basis.”

John’s longstanding relationship with Simon Clough means Palace Chemicals now supply World of Tiles with over 15 products from the company’s portfolio including tile adhesives, grouts and levellers.
