WET ROOMS TANKED UP
The experts at Palace Chemicals explain how to achieve a successful wet room installation using their products.
The risk of water getting into the substrate behind a tiling installation and causing a failure is the reason that bathrooms and wet rooms are among the trickiest types of tiling project to achieve successfully. Correct techniques and the most suitable and highest quality products are equally important.
A key point to understand is that adhesives and grouts will not prevent the ingress of water in a wet area. Even if they are designed to ‘resist’ water and not break down as the water passes through them, they should not be considered as products which can provide protection for the substrates to which they are fixed.
To provide a full waterproofing solution, as stated in the 2018 British Standard (BS 5385 Part 1: 6.1.1.3): In wet areas, e.g. showers, wetrooms and steam rooms, substrates should be protected with a suitable proprietary tanking membrane system.
Palace Chemicals offers a range of tanking solutions, developed to help the designer and tile fixer achieve a longlasting and durable protective finish. The PALACE SHOWER-TIGHT system provides all required components to tank around either an over-bath shower unit or fully enclosed shower cubicle up to 4m². The system consists of a 1 litre Tilers Primer and 2.5 litres grey flexible liquid waterproof coating, complete with 10 metres of polyester tape to reinforce seams in joints around wall/floor junctions, along with all corners. These are applied together with the seamless, watertight protective liquid membrane which prevents the passage of moisture from within the tiled area through to surfaces and structures sensitive to the effects of prolonged water migration.
If a full wet room or larger scale bathroom installation is being undertaken, then PALACE AQUA-BAN is the recommended product to use. It is a larger scale fully waterproof liquid membrane system designed to protect substrates receiving tiles in locations such as wet rooms, commercial or domestic showers, bathrooms, and swimming pools.
Like the PALACE SHOWER-TIGHT system, PALACE AQUA- BAN will provide a waterproof barrier within the tiled area, on to all types of water sensitive substrates such as plaster, render, plasterboard, tile backer boards, timber, suspended floors, concrete floors and plywood overlays.
PALACE AQUA-BAN is supplied as a 7kg, grey flexible latex waterproof rapid drying coating, to be applied either by brush or roller. It has the unique ability to bridge cracks or joints within the treated unit that are known to be less than 3mm wide. Its excellent adhesion properties also ensure a permanent bond to inert plastic and metal elements whilst still retaining the weight loading capabilities of the receiving substrate without the need for an additional primer pre-coat.
Where a complete system approach to protecting all wall and floor joints and pipe entry points within a wet area enclosure is needed, the PALACE AQUA-BAN SEALING KIT can also be

purchased. This comprises an elastomeric rubber/polyester gasket, which is supplied to protect pipe entry points, together with a 100mm wide by 10-metre length roll of fully elastomeric reinforcing tape to be cut to fit over all structural wall and floor joints.
The built-in flexibility of the system is designed to accommodate the anticipated level of movement and vibration in a solid stable structure and provides a solvent-free waterproof coating ready for fixing wall and floor tiles. The elastomeric reinforcing tape provides crack-bridging protection for all wall and floor joints and other locations where any gaps, cracks or joints are likely to be wider than 3mm. This system is also available in larger sizes for commercial projects such as swimming pools. One of the USPs of these products is that they can both be tiled over or flood tested just two hours after application, making for a fast- track tanking option.
The complete Palace Tanking Systems (SHOWER-TIGHT & AQUA-BAN) have been independently tested against the requirements of EAD 030352-00-0503, the latest standard for Liquid Applied Watertight covering systems and kits for the protection of wet room floors and walls. It offers the tiler a one-stop solution to ensuring the complete waterproof protection of sensitive substrates behind tiled showers and wet rooms.
Adhesives used to fix tiles over tanked surfaces should be water-resistant and suitable for wet installations and be able to achieve solid bed fixing. For floor installations, the tile adhesive should be compatible with any underfloor heating system included. A Palace cement-based product classified as EN12004 C2 will provide the most reliable bond to tanked surfaces in areas which are subject to frequent wetting.
When it comes to grouting, a Palace CG2 cement-based grout – such as PALACE ANTI-MOULD or PALACE COLOUR-LOCK GROUT – should be used, which will not only offer a complete Palace system, but will also be efflorescence-resistant and water-repellant, containing an anti-bacterial additive to inhibit the development of black spot mould. Epoxy grouts can also be used to provide a higher level of water and stain-resistance. Cement-based grouts can darken when wet and change colour again when they dry, and the application of a grout sealer will help limit this transient visual effect.
