CLEANING, RESTORATION & MAINTENANCE ON TRACK
Mapei tiling system is just the ticket at Edgware Road underground station.
A fast-track Mapei wall tiling system and UltraCare cleaning and maintenance products have been used to complete a surface refurbishment at Edgware Road underground station. The project, carried out by JNG and DMC, featured tiles from Johnson Tiles’ Prismatics range installed throughout the ticket hall and station’s walkways. Mapei products promoted a fast, safe application, with the render, adhesive and sealant featuring EMICODE: EC1 Plus-certified formulations, with very low VOC. Mapei’s UltraCare HD Cleaner and Ultracolor Plus are also included within Mapei’s Zero line, with CO2 fully offset in the entire life cycle.
Works undertaken by JNG and DMC form part of a series of upgrades taking place on the Edgware branch of the Northern Line in central London. During the project preparation stage, JNG and DMC removed all existing wall tiles and adhesive residue back to the solid substrate. The team then skimmed walls with Mapei Planitop Fast 330 quick-setting, fibre-reinforced cementitious levelling mortar, to even out irregularities and ready surfaces for tiling within a four-hour timeframe. Existing walls were then cleaned with UltraCare HD Cleaner Zero to remove all traces of organic dirt. The applicaton followed extensive trials at Kentish Town underground station, during an earlier Mapei project, and training of contractors on-site.
Mapei Keraquick S1 quick-setting, deformable adhesive was then used to install the Prismatics Ceramic tiles, which were grout-ready after two hours. The installation was finished with Ultracolor Plus grout in a contrasting grey shade and Mapesil AC silicone sealant. Mapei Ultracolor Plus is a quick- setting and drying anti-efflorescence cementitious grout and Mapesil AC is a highly elastic colour-matched pure acetic
silicone sealant. Both products benefit from mould-resistant BioBlock technology and Ultracolor Plus also features water- repellent DropEffect.
The tile specification included Johnson Tiles’ Prismatics White Gloss 200x100mm, Prismatics Victorian Green Gloss 200x100mm and Prismatics Black Gloss 200x100mm.
