NATURAL STONE

the last two years, Marmoliva has been a witness of this upturn in Europe. People from Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, and Holland now do not only want a floor made of marble, but also mosaics, tailor-made furniture and sculptures. Marble is reinventing itself as the piece of art that it has always been.

“MARBLE IS REINVENTING

ITSELF AS THE PIECE OF ART THAT IT HAS ALWAYS BEEN.”

Famous architects, such as Zaha Hadid, have played with the materiality of the natural stone in their designs. However, the British public has not been completely conquered yet and, even in high-end residential projects, sometimes artificial stone is preferred. Price is not the main concern, but I still would like to address this assumption. Natural stone is not always more expensive than artificial stone- the chosen material and the way you source it are very important factors. Silestone, for instance, can be very pricey; and some people are very surprised to find out how affordable some marbles are, for instance, crema marfil. It is very important to make this point as this isn’t always a matter of straightforward common sense. The 'how to source it' question is a tricky

one because you do not want to surrender the quality of the material or the working conditions of the quarry to reduce the price. Personally, I have chosen to work with Italian and Spanish quarries whose owners I know and trust. It is a factor to bear in mind.

Another reason that makes people reluctant to decide on marble is the fear that it will stain in certain areas of the house, like the kitchen or the shower. The truth is that, just like other materials that we have in our homes, such as wood or carpet, marble requires some maintenance. However, if you washed the marble with Marseille soap, and polished it every few years, the marble will have the same strength and energy that you admired the first day.

A catalogue photo of artificial stone can deceive the inexperienced eye, but when we have them in front, and we can touch them, things change. Natural stone is a very robust material, attractive to the eye and also to the touch, with an inimitable texture. Although what really makes the stone special is the way it ages. While the artificial stone visual appearance fades very quickly, the natural stone evolves and takes on new nuances. An object made of stone does not grow old, it becomes antique.

With the help of an artisan, architects can use natural stone to create stunning, everlasting pieces and spaces that improve with time and use.
