Mark Hanson mark@opusbm.co.uk Hello and welcome to the May/June issue of

Tomorrow’s Retail Floors! I start this note with some personal news that, after five years as Editor of TRF, I am moving on to pastures new and this will be my final issue. With this in mind, I’ve been sure to make it a good one.

Since our last issue, the retail landscape has changed dramatically as shops in England have once again opened their doors to the public. However, upon a return to the local high street or shopping centre, the closed shutters of pandemic causalities are unavoidable and a stark indicator of the future of retail.

This issue features comment from several industry experts, further investigating the current state of retail and its future direction. Following on from his previous column on the rise of independent retailers, the Carpet Foundation’s Rupert Anton this time addresses family-owned businesses and why they’re stronger than ever right now. Also emphasising the importance of personalised service, we have comment from Zak Manhire of retail display specialist Regency Design. Specifically examining the impact that COVID-19 and Brexit has had on manufacturing, Zak explains why retaining the ‘human touch’ is vital to move the economy forward in these challenging times.

Although the world seems to be making a return to some sort of ‘normal’, whether we’ll be able to go on that summer holiday abroad this year is still somewhat unclear. This issue’s Editor’s Choice features flooring inspiration from around the world to demonstrate how homeowners can bring the sunshine in. Also in this issue, we have sections on LVT & Vinyl, Natural Materials and Kitchen & Dining Areas; as well as all the latest news and product releases.

Ending as I started, I’d like to use this opportunity to reflect on my time as Editor. The world of flooring retail is incredibly diverse and has led me to meet a wide range of people over the years. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time at the helm and would like to thank both our readers and contributors for all of your continued support.

I hope you enjoy the read!
