STEP INSIDE KITCHENS What’s Cooking? Stella Coyle, National Sales Manager of Karndean Designflooring, talks us

through the popular trends and sought-after qualities for kitchen flooring right now, and explains how Karndean’s latest collections can meet these.

At Karndean Designflooring, we combine the natural features and intriguing forms of natural wood and stone with cutting- edge design to create practical, easy to clean and durable floors. These qualities are beneficial when it comes to the kitchen- a room where spills and busy foot-traffic are the norm. However, with Karndean you needn’t sacrifice style and creativity to achieve a hardwearing floor that can stand up to the hustle and bustle, parties and gatherings. We have a wide variety of wood and stone designs that our independent retailers can recommend to their customers and, on top of that, there are many laying patterns and design features to choose from.

A brick bond pattern suits a number of spaces and will always be a classic look for a kitchen. Creating elongated lines, this layout can give the appearance of a wider room, so it will certainly enhance a smaller space. The smoky grey tones and sleek appearance of our Opus Fumo, one of the six very recent additions to the contemporary collection, will work effectively in both traditional and modern kitchens. Adding a contrasting design strip in between the tiles to replicate a grouting effect will make the finished look even more eye- catching and attractive.

Unlike real grouting, which is difficult to clean, our design strips are cut from our existing luxury vinyl tile (LVT) so there’s no need to clean them with harsh chemicals. They are also cut to the same thickness as the rest of the floor, creating a seamless surface with no grime or dirt traps. All the homeowner need do is simply sweep and mop the floor to keep it germ-free and looking its best.

Simple but with an elegant twist, a diamond pattern creates an interesting look. You could suggest the homeowner keeps it minimalistic with one design and colour throughout, or you could show them how beautiful the chequerboard effect looks, using the clean and opulent white tones of our Art Select Fiore and classic Italian grey and black marble of Art Select Otono. It can breathe life into a room with an otherwise neutral décor, or can give structure to an open-plan space.

Real marble can be very slippery when wet, cold underfoot and unforgiving if anything were to be dropped. Like all our stone designs, with Art Select Otono and Fiore homeowners can have all the aesthetic appeal of the real tiles with a more resilient surface that’s also warmer underfoot. In addition, Karndean is fully waterproof and won’t swell, warp or crack when wet. For extra reassurance, all our products are highly slip-resistant.

We recently expanded our popular Knight Tile collection and introduced 15 new contemporary products, including four exclusive smaller plank designs. The growing trend to match designs room to room in separate rooms, open-plan spaces

and broken living areas is set to continue, therefore we now offer Washed Scandi Pine, Grey Limed Oak, Pale Limed Oak and Lime Washed Oak in a new 18”x3” small plank and matching 36”x6” full length plank. Why not suggest laying the 18”x3” plank in a stylish herringbone design? The sophisticated finish will give the space a striking, high-end look.
