A DAY IN THE LIFE A DAY IN THE LIFE

Each month we catch up with a health & safety professional to find out about their varied work/life balance. This month we caught up with Christian Harris, Managing Director of Slip Safety Services.

private equity houses to decide on investments into SME companies. I’d also done a few entrepreneurial things like an online poker affiliate marketing website.

WHAT ARE YOUR MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES?

If I’m doing my job right, my main responsibility is to lead the company’s strategy towards our goal of being the partner of choice for building owners and managers, insurers, FM companies and other stakeholders on slip safety and floorcare.

2

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE INDUSTRY?

Excuse the pun, but I “fell into” it! I started in this space as a temporary thing to do some sales whilst I explored an opportunity to set up a business in a totally different industry.

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE THIS JOB?

I was a business consultant, helping

WHAT DO YOU DO IN A TYPICAL DAY?

On a day-to-day basis I am mostly involved in speaking to clients (new and existing) to understand their problems and to see how we can help. Another important aspect of my role is to engage in mutually-beneficial partnerships ranging from insurers to consultants or other suppliers in the risk management space.

“ON A DAY-TO-DAY BASIS I AM MOSTLY

INVOLVED IN SPEAKING TO CLIENTS (NEW AND EXISTING) TO UNDERSTAND THEIR

PROBLEMS AND TO SEE HOW WE CAN HELP.”

WHAT’S YOUR MOST MEMORABLE OR PROUDEST

WORK MOMENT? Setting up Slip Safety Services

to bring experience and a unique solution of ongoing risk management to the industry. I’m really proud of the incremental steps forward that my new business is taking; each day is progress on a very clear pathway to becoming a scaled-up, valuable supplier and partner to various clients in all sorts of sectors.

WHAT’S THE BEST PART OF YOUR JOB?

Working with our new and existing customers to bring ongoing solutions to help manage their slip risk by over 50%.

WHAT’S THE WORST PART OF YOUR JOB?

Probably the frustration felt when a prospect cannot see the benefit of proactive preventative management – though that likely just means I haven’t explained it adequately.

DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE STARTING OUT IN THE

INDUSTRY? I work in a niche to say the least, but I think that’s a great place to stand out and really add value.

9

HOW DO YOU LIKE TO UNWIND? I’m a member of the RAC in London

and enjoy a few frames of snooker with friends there. I also enjoy hacking around a golf course a few times a year. Mostly though, spending time with my family, in particular on our annual trip to Positano.

WHAT CAREER WOULD YOU LIKE IF YOU WEREN’T DOING THIS?

I’m keen on travel, food and wine so I think being one of these celebrity bloggers that get to visit all sorts of amazing places would be great fun.
