Wind and Solar Powered Defibrillator Cabinets by Turtle Defib Cabinets

There are more than 30,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in the UK each year according to the British Heart Foundation and the survival rate is less than one in 10. For every minute that passes without defibrillation, the chance of survival decreases by seven to 10%, with survival being unlikely after ten minutes. Unfortunately, many of these medical emergencies happen in outdoor places where there is no electricity supply and therefore no publicly accessible defib cabinets – which need power to remain heated above 10 degrees – are nearby.
Advice from the Resuscitation Council UK states that public access defibrillators should be within 200 meters or a two-minute brisk walk from where it is needed. Therefore, Turtle Defib Cabinets decided to act on this challenge and commenced a two-year research and development period to create a product that would help to save lives in places where people were previously vulnerable: a wind and solar powered cabinet.
Turtle worked with The University of Warwick to conduct academic feasibility studies, which identified issues with solar alone, due to the UK’s limited winter sunlight and limitations on where the panel can be placed on a vertical cabinet. By the beginning of 2024, Turtle had engineered the first and only external, heated – failsafe – defibrillator cabinet that successfully captures solar and wind power, and has an optional remote monitoring option.
The unique design angles the solar panel in a way that maximises power from the sun’s rays, but also comprises a robust wind turbine to ensure the cabinet works when the UK weather is at its worst.
Turtle has been able to set higher standards when it comes to saving lives in environments where an electricity supply may be restricted or cost- prohibitive to install. By the end of 2024, 17 wind and solar powered defib cabinets will be installed across the UK, including on construction sites and golf courses and in nature reserves and public parks.
