BACK UP POWER

WHEN FAILURE IS NOT AN OPTION
PPSPower talks us through its full turnkey service for stand-by power systems including decommissioning and removal of existing equipment, mechanical and electrical works, installation of digital control systems and full generator commissioning and testing.
Based at headquarters in Sherburn-in-Elmet, PPSPower helps its customers maintain their generator and UPS systems, extending the life of their assets through regular maintenance schedules. Its team of skilled service and maintenance engineers work closely with customers to understand their needs, improve energy efficiency and keep their critical systems running with bespoke maintenance, repair and replacement service packages.
Working carefully with customers in a variety of critical sectors, PPSPower develops cost-effective solutions that maximise the reliability of their back-up power systems.
Turnkey stand-by power services Since 1956, PPSPower has been a trusted supplier of back-up power solutions. Previously trading as Powerplant Services and the Progress Group, in 2014 the two companies came together to form PPSPower. The company now operates a full nationwide service, with dedicated generator and UPS departments and a team of nationally deployed engineers based across England and Wales, with a dedicated depot in Scotland.
The company benefits from being part of a wider group of power solutions companies; its sister company YorPower distributes generators worldwide, while control and automation company Glenace and generator sales company Generator Warehouse further complement and strengthen the service offering.
PPSPower provides generator and UPS services nationally for companies such as UNITE, Tesco, Kiely Bros, Menzies Distribution and several of the UK’s police forces. These organisations place trust in the firm’s dedicated engineering teams to provide absolute reliability to their power sources, and their trust continues to be rewarded.
Think green with generator maintenance The firm understands that the environments it supports are critical, which is why it recently launched a Green contract – its most sustainable way of carrying out proper preventative maintenance.
Still exceptionally robust, as part of this contract PPSPower generally carries out visits twice a year if the generator is there for emergency standby operations – one minor and one major visit.
22 Tomorrow’s FM Yearbook 2020/21
The minor service visit consists of 56 checks, which includes: • A 26-point engine check which covers topping up levels, taking and reporting readings and inspecting for leaks. Cleaning key areas to ensure efficiency and tightening and greasing accordingly.
• A 24-point battery, control panel and electrical system check. Staff also carry out and report on drop test readings on all batteries to ensure reliability, but also safety. Control panels are thoroughly checked over.
• A six-point fuel system check for safety and reliability. This includes checking for leaks, reporting on fuel levels, examining injector pipes and checking the fuel solenoid.
• An inspection of the environment in which the generator is located, which is carried out when engineers arrive to make sure it’s safe and appropriate for its use.
On a major service visit, experts carry out all of the above again and also replace the oil and fuel filters to help extend the life of these liquids and mitigate damage to the engine.
The Green contract can lead to vast savings. As an example, on a standard kVA back-up generator, the annual cost of an SFG20 compliant contract (including two visits) can be around £2,320, compared to just £878 for two visits as part of PPSPower’s Green contract. This contract covers all other points of the SFG20 guide (and more) apart from the six-monthly oil change.
Like all PPSPower’s maintenance packages, the firm understands there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ approach to generator maintenance, so is exceptionally flexible to work with the client for a tailored solution that is both cost effective and reliable.
