WINTER MAINTENANCE WEATHERING THE WINTER
As winter approaches, business owners need to take proactive measures to safeguard their properties against the harsh conditions that this season brings. Hein Hemke, Managing Director at BELFOR UK, shares his top tips to ensure your business is well-prepared for the colder months.
While snowy rooftops and frost-covered landscapes may be picturesque, they also introduce a host of challenges that can cause serious damage. Without proper preparation, the impact of freezing temperatures, icy walkways, and heavy snowfalls could be disastrous.
The risks of winter weather The winter months are notorious for unpredictable weather patterns that can significantly harm people and property. From plummeting temperatures to hazardous ice, these conditions can cause costly damage if ignored. Frozen pipes, roof collapses due to snow buildup, and ice-coated car parks and walkways are just a few examples of how winter can turn from scenic to catastrophic in an instant.
A well-prepared property is the best defence against winter-related disasters. By taking the following steps to protect your building and its surroundings, you can help avoid injuries and costly repairs, and ensure that your business remains functional throughout the colder months.
1. Prevent frozen pipes Frozen pipes can halt your water supply and heating while posing a serious flooding risk when they burst. Pipes in unheated or uninsulated areas such as basements or attics are particularly vulnerable. To prevent this, consider adding insulation to exposed pipes and maintaining a
consistent indoor temperature. If you suspect a pipe has frozen, turn off the water supply immediately and thaw the pipe slowly using heat sources like portable heaters or insulated wraps.
2. Flood-proof your property Winter storms bring heavy rain, increasing the risk of flooding. If your business is located in a flood-prone area, it’s essential to have a flood preparedness plan in place. Start by sealing gaps around external doors and using sandbags to prevent water from entering your building. Additionally, ensure that any valuable inventory or equipment is stored on higher ground in case flooding occurs.
3. Clear your gutters Clogged gutters can lead to water buildup, especially during heavy rainfall. If water can’t flow through your drainage system effectively, it may overflow and leak into the building. Ensure that gutters and drains are regularly cleared of debris such as leaves, dirt, and silt. This is an easy yet crucial step in protecting your property from water damage during the winter months.
4. Watch out for snow and ice buildup Snow accumulation on rooftops can be dangerous,
