HOW WILL AI IMPACT ON ROOFING, WATERPROOFING
AND INSULATION? Dr. Roy Jenkins, MD of Krypton Chemicals, examines the future impact of AI on the roofing, waterproofing and insulation sectors, and how he is currently pioneering robotic waterproofing in the UK.
How will AI impact on waterproofing?
My mission is to research all available publications on artificial intelligence and assess how it will impact UK construction, waterproofing, roofing and insulation. The new Knowledge Hub will partner with many AI experts to assist the thousands of main contractors, roofing contractors, specification companies and distributors with online training courses such as AI for beginners, AI for sales offices and salespeople, AI for estimators, AI for marketing, and AI for strategies for growth.
The AI Knowledge Hub includes articles on:
• What is AI? • Getting started with AI • Different types of AI
Recent blogs on the Knowledge Hub include:
• How AI will impact on waterproofing?
• Impact of AI on insulation
• How will AI impact on building surveyors?
• AI impact on facilites management
Current Projects that the AI Knowledge Hub is researching and reviewing
The speed at which AI and robotics is evolving is taking myself and other experts by surprise. We need the construction, waterproofing, roofing and cladding Industry to dip their toe into the future of AI and embrace robotics, especially in waterproofing and the building of concrete walls. You can read about this in the October blog.
Robots in flat roof waterproofing
There are two robots used for waterproofing in the UK today. These robots can apply BBA waterproofing at the rate of 1800sqm per day and save the building surveyor and client at least 25% over the traditional waterproofing methods. These robots are being used on large flat roofs and low-slope roofs.
Robots on sloping profiled asbestos roofing encapsulation
One contractor with his robot is trying to modify it to work on a pitched slope profile asbestos cement roof, so his workmen will not need to walk on the old Asbestos fragile roof.
Smaller robots for roofs less than 250sq/m
We have been in discussion with one European manufacturer of robots for waterproofing and they will have a research programme to develop a smaller Robot for waterproofing for smaller roofs.
AI design the perfect liquid waterproofing
One European manufacturer of BBA Liquid Waterproofing is developing a new one-layer liquid waterproofing system where the application does not need glass fibre or polyester reinforcement and is solvent-free. The liquid when cured has the same physical properties as reinforced Bitumen membranes (12MPa Mega Pascals). All traditional liquid waterproofing systems in Europe today require two layers, are solvent- based and have an average strength of 4.5MPa. If you ask ChatGPT to design the ideal liquid waterproofing system today it will specify one layer (2kg) of high strength, solvent-free and no reinforcement with a 20-year Warranty.

AI designs primer that cures on wet roof substrates
A leading European manufacturer has introduced an innovative primer that can be applied to damp or wet surfaces, curing in less than four hours. This breakthrough, driven by AI, raises the question: Could this advancement challenge the traditional chemistry principle that a dry surface is essential for achieving a 100% bond?
Where could AI technology be disruptive?
• Small roofing contractors could embrace AI and become national roofing contractors working in every city.
• An innovative drone company could decide to enter the roof specification business.
• Building surveyors can write their specifications and have a much wider choice of waterproofing and get real cost savings.
• AI could replace the need for a specification sales force and the method of specifying a waterproofing system will be much easier on new creative platforms.
