Stay in charge: UPS battery management A major cause of generator service callouts in winter is dead batteries. However, with the right preparations in place, these can be largely avoided. Uninterruptible power supply (UPS) battery management is essential with the UPS system being totally dependent on its battery backup if it is to perform as required.

People regularly check their smoke alarms at home to make sure the batteries have not run down- such a simple check, but potentially a lifesaver. The same principle applies to a UPS system located in an environment where the critical load it supports could be for an operating theatre in a hospital or a flight control tower to direct traffic systems. If the back-up batteries were to fail on a mains blackout, the UPS would undoubtedly fail and drop its critical load. The consequences of this could be life-threatening.

During winter, batteries are at particular risk of damage due to freezing and condensation causing water damage.

They should also be checked for a clean and tight connection on all terminals to ensure there are no loose, dirty or corroded terminals that can cause a problem when power is required. Older generators can also use an older style of vented batteries that need regularly checking and topping up with distilled water.

attraction moving The London Eye is one of the capital city’s most iconic landmarks, carrying millions of passengers and rotating 2,300 miles every year.

For an attraction of such stature and prestige it is essential that it has a back-up power supply that can be relied upon in an emergency.

The London Eye’s technical team entrusts PPSPower with that responsibility. PPSPower performs the generator’s major service to ensure there is a back- up power supply ready to act immediately should it be called upon. The team also provides services such as oil replacements when required, optimising performance and maintaining the efficiency of the generator while also maximising its lifespan.

The contract requires PPSPower’s engineers to attend for maintenance of the London Eye’s backup power systems and also being available for callouts 24/7 should any problems arise.
