HOSKING ASSOCIATES PROVIDES SUPPORT TO COMFORT CONTROLS AS

IT CONTINUES TO GROW The success of Hosking Associates’ eight-year partnership with Comfort Controls has been marked with the announcement of Comfort Controls’ RoSPA Gold award win - the highest accreditation possible via the health and safety consultancy for exemplary standards.

Going for Gold

Formed in 1984, Comfort Controls works on global projects in a wide range of sectors including hospitals, schools, industrial units and leisure centres. The team helps create energy-efficient buildings which are safe, sustainable and beneficial to their occupants by carefully managing the balance between the user’s requirements and their energy consumption.

Despite the challenging and diverse nature of the projects they work on, the team and management at Comfort Controls have exhibited dedication and professionalism in their approach to all aspects of health and safety. Guided by Hosking Associates this attitude has led them to realise the challenging achievement of winning a Gold RoSPA Award.

To win such an accolade upon an initial application is rare. Louise Hosking, Director at Hosking Associates commented: “This has taken real focus, involving everyone in the business. They have used ordinary, readily available technology to track progress and training, then survey staff to understand what works and what doesn’t. They have taken on the challenge of talking openly about health and mental wellness in an organisation which is predominately male. We provide the direction and focus to keep them moving forward – facilitating support as needed. Everything from us is a team effort, with consultants working on site and support crew in our office.”

Shared vision

Hosking Associates and Comfort Controls share the same outlook -

that success is down to staff - and it is therefore vital that employees are looked after, both mentally and physically.

One of the biggest steps Comfort Controls has taken is to employ their own dedicated health and safety coordinator, Jemma Blande. In her role, Blande makes sure all internal auditing of systems is completed, engineers are furnished with the right health and safety information at the right time, and coordinates feedback.

Hosking added: “I have always advocated that, where possible, companies have their own internal resource to truly embed what they do, but this isn’t always financially viable. We want our clients to become self-sufficient when it comes to their daily health and safety operations. There are easy, practical ideas and systems businesses can use to help them reach exceptional standards of health and safety. These take time and focus, but it is essential that managers and business owners utilise these processes.”

The focus of the last year in Hosking and Comfort Controls ongoing partnership has been on managing the health of the workforce. Key areas

have been prioritised, including the formation of a number of wellbeing initiatives, such as gym membership, health insurance and a stress support packages. They have also been talking to engineers more about health issues, so it starts to become part of regular safety discussions.

Growth

Hosking’s support has helped Comfort Controls grow sustainably and safely. Since 2015, Comfort Controls has experienced real growth – initially employing five to six core staff, they now employ 48 people full-time.

Kris Mitchell, Director at Comfort Controls, added: “Hosking Associates has played an integral role in our growth. Their strategic support has been second to none. Louise Hosking and her team have made it their business to get under the skin of Comfort Controls. She drives quality across the business at every level, ensuring everyone appreciates and embraces necessary risk assessments, instead of fearing them. We continually evolve, not because we have to, but because we want to.”
