EVACUATION: QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO ASK


With reduced staff and fl exible working becoming the norm, how many people now require training on your evacuation chairs? Here, Evaccess answers this and other important questions that employers need to know.


Are you fully covered, always having trained operatives in the building? If the answer is no, then it is time to re- evaluate your existing evacuation plan. It is crucial that there is always at least one trained operative on site in an occupied building. Fire does not discriminate, and people may need assisted evacuation.


COVID-19 has dramatically altered the typical working week, with many employees working from home, however as buildings begin to open following the vaccine roll-out, we are looking at life becoming more ‘normal’ than it has been since the global pandemic outbreak.


This for many, will mean fl exible working or a return to the offi ce. Offi ces bringing people back gradually may fi nd themselves in a situation where they have no trained operatives on site. This could prove catastrophic in the possible event of a fi re.


Ask yourselves these important


questions: 1. How many people with reduced mobility are in the building, and when?


2. How many trained operatives do we have in at any one time?

3. Do we need to get some additional staff trained and certifi cated on using our chairs?


4. Do we have the right evacuation chair for the staircase, landings and most importantly, the individuals who may rely on them the most?


5. Are your chairs easy to operate by one person and can additional operators be trained in a timely manner to ensure you have cover?


6. How many can still operate the kit, given there may have been months of inactivity?


Training Some chairs are easier to operate than others and therefore, choose a chair that works for your business and colleagues. You will fi nd it easier to source more volunteers or operators if the chair is simple to operate and does not rely on their physical strength. Cheaper units do not give you this and could cost you more in the long run.


Service Your chairs should be serviced annually to ensure that they are safe to use at all times. All units should be part of a monthly or quarterly inspections and undergo a visual inspection to identify anything that could potentially lead
