HEALTH, SAFETY AND WELLBEING

A COMBINED APPROACH The UK electronic security market is booming and technology continues to boost market

growth in the sector. Rather than seeing this as a threat to traditional practices, Paul Grist, Director UK at Trigion Security Services, explains how electronic solutions can perfectly complement security officers to bolster both safety and the bottom line.

We live in a world where automation seems to be the answer to everything. In recent years, the rate at which technology has influenced the security sector is staggering. According to AMA Research, the UK electronic security market was estimated to be worth £2.35bn back in 2017, and it’s only set to grow.

As technology has become more widely available, the cost of implementing an electronic solution has reduced, making it far more accessible to individuals and companies of all sizes. Today, we have access to a wealth of cost-effective electronic security options that cover almost every eventuality, from CCTV, access control, fire and intruder alarm systems to remote monitoring services. Many may think that these solutions replace the need for traditional services, such as security officers. However, it’s often people that make all the difference. It doesn’t matter how advanced installations and communication systems are, ultimately, it’s individual people who will have to assess the actual risks, make decisions and take appropriate action.

There are always going to be circumstances and environments where having a security officer present is essential. For example, in shopping centres, where customer engagement and assistance also plays an important part of the role and needs to be seamlessly combined with an officer’s security and safety responsibilities. However, by adopting a smart approach, and combining traditional security practices with electronic fire and security solutions, one can make significant efficiencies, whilst at the same time maintaining high levels of safety and security.

If the presence of a security officer is able to be supported by CCTV and other electronic security measures, backed- up by a remote monitoring centre, then all bases and eventualities can be properly covered. CCTV provides

an all-seeing eye, often covering places that a human cannot reach or be present in at all times. When a potential problem is identified, the remote monitoring centre can immediately assess the level of danger and, where necessary, they can promptly deploy an officer to respond to the situation. Not only does this combined approach improve security, it also frees up officers to take on additional value added roles, such as reception and concierge duties, telephone answering and weekly fire alarm tests, to name but a few.

The security industry is constantly changing and adapting to its customer’s different requirements. At Trigion, we are committed to developing and recommending exactly the right, cost-effective combination of electronic and security personnel options. This provides each of our customers with a bespoke and streamlined solution, tailored to meet their precise requirements. Having all fire, security and monitoring services provided by a single company, also means that there is a single point of contact at all times, making the entire service easy to manage, and enabling our customers to benefit from economies of scale.

With more than 50 years in the fire and security industry, we know that combined security solutions work well together, although stand-alone solutions can also be an appropriate solution, particularly in smaller, low risk premises. We offer the most advanced and innovative technology available, and never take ‘a one size fits all’ approach. All of our security officers are vetted and trained to National Security Inspectorate (NSI) Standard BS7858. We are approved to NSI Gold standard for our manned security services, our security operations centre and for all electronic security disciplines. Our security operations centre and manned security operation also hold SIA approval.
