In each issue we ask an FM professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions, this month we spoke to Guy Pakenham, Managing Director of Cordant Cleaning.
under extreme pressure and intense scrutiny whilst maintaining a polite, cheerful and helpful attitude. The service industry could learn a lot.
Q4
IF MONEY WAS NO OBJECT, WHAT CAR
WOULD YOU BUY?
I am on the turn (in terms of mid-life) and would now elect for a big Range Rover that would take me and the family through France in comfort. (I’m so ashamed I wrote that!)
Q5 Q1
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?
My first ever paid job was washing marrows in a market garden centre for £1.19 per hour. It taught me the importance of perseverance.
Q2 Q3
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?
I simply applied to work for Tennant when I left University because they offered a company car and a chance to earn commission.
WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,
DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?
The staff who work in A&E departments. They are expected to work efficiently and effectively often

HOW WOULD YOU IMPROVE THE
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT
INDUSTRY? Facilities Managers take a building or a site that is already constructed (in the vast majority of cases) and then try and innovate as to how best to “look after it”. I would introduce a system whereby the FM industry has input from the outset, at the early design and construction stage.
Q6
WHAT DID YOU WANT TO
BE WHEN YOU WERE
GROWING UP? My grandfather was a soldier and had a very active career, including leading a platoon on the Normandy Beaches. I always wanted to follow in his footsteps.
Q7
IF YOU COULD HAVE A SUPER
POWER FOR A DAY, WHAT
WOULD IT BE AND WHY? I’d like to be able to read minds. I think
it would give me both wisdom and empathy, the challenge would be to use it for good and not personal gain.
Q8 Q9
IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER
PARTY WITH ANY THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD THEY BE
AND WHY? Hugh Laurie, my late father and Jesus. This is a beautiful combination of love and laughter.
WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE
FUTURE OF THE FACILITIES
MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY? I think more technology will be developed and introduced that will put greater control in the hands of the end users. The IoT will greatly influence the foreseeable future and FM companies will have to add value in new ways.
Q10
WHERE WE WORK’S
GRAHAM BIRD ASKED: HOW OFTEN DO YOU TAKE THE TIME TO QUIETLY SIT DOWN AND TRULY OBSERVE WHAT REALLY GOES ON IN YOUR
BUILDINGS? Less often than I should, but more so in recent months; unless you build a team that can deliver excellence without you, then you will always struggle to find quality time.
