MODUSPEC SECURES DNV TECHNOLOGY QUALIFICATION FOR BOP

REAL-TIME MONITORING ModuSpec, MR Group’s rig and well control equipment solutions business, has received DNV Technology Qualification (TQ) for its blowout preventer (BOP) real-time monitoring (RTM) capabilities within the ModuSpec Argus digital platform.

The qualification confirms that ModuSpec’s RTM workflow meets DNV requirements for performance, robustness and data integrity in safety-critical BOP monitoring and testing, supporting the wider adoption of digital well control assurance on the Norwegian Continental Shelf.

The DNV TQ covers ModuSpec’s RTM functionality within the Argus platform, which consolidates critical rig data into a single environment and provides real-time, at-a-glance visibility of BOP and other key well control systems. This follows DNV’s earlier TQ award to Offshore Technical Compliance (OTC) for its digital pressure testing (DPT) capabilities. ModuSpec maintains a strategic partnership with OTC to provide integrated well control system assurance. Together, the partnership is the first to offer a streamlined, fully TQ-certified RTM and DPT offering.

“DNV’s Technology Qualification is a major milestone for ModuSpec and for our customers,” said Duco de Haan, MR Group’s CEO.

“It validates not just our monitoring and testing technology, but the assurance framework around it - from data quality and risk management through to audit trails, reporting and expert support.”

Argus combines system-generated analytics with structured case management, creating an auditable evidence trail that links observations, alerts, operator communications and resolution.

Designed for assurance, not just monitoring

Unlike tools that operate primarily as standalone dashboards, ModuSpec has built a full assurance framework

around its RTM and DPT capabilities. This includes continuous real-time monitoring, a formal escalation process, integrated case management and comprehensive end-of-well reporting that supports regulatory engagement and condition-based maintenance planning.

This approach has already demonstrated value in live operations, where ModuSpec’s monitoring has identified abnormal equipment behaviour, enabling rapid intervention before issues escalated and helping to avoid unplanned downtime.

“Real-time monitoring is not about replacing offshore decision-making,” said John Hoefler, Senior Vice President, Technical, at ModuSpec.

“Our role is to provide independent specialist oversight with a disciplined case management workflow, so developing issues are detected early, clearly documented and communicated quickly to the right people.”

Human expertise at the centre

A defining feature of ModuSpec’s RTM service model is the integration of experienced human oversight alongside digital monitoring. Each monitored rig benefits from 24/7 surveillance by senior subsea specialists, supported by supervisors, giving operators a structured second set of eyes on BOP health and well control barriers.

Potential anomalies are reviewed internally before escalation, with clear communication pathways to rig teams. Every issue raised generates a unique case reference, with all supporting data, correspondence and actions logged to create audit-ready traceability from sensor

data through to operator response and resolution.

Operational insight and efficiency

For operators, Argus provides fleet- and rig-level dashboards with a live overview of communications status, key BOP performance indicators, active alarms and test status, using intuitive visual cues to highlight emerging concerns.

Users can analyse real-time data to identify trends, track cycle counts, closing times and pressures, giving immediate visibility of when specific function tests or pressure tests are due.

In the US Gulf, where RTM capability is already a regulatory requirement, ModuSpec’s RTM service supports extended BOP testing intervals under existing frameworks, helping to reduce non-productive time and reduce unnecessary equipment wear.

Digital pressure testing, delivered through an integrated partner workflow, replaces subjective chart interpretation with high-resolution digital analysis and verification of test configurations.

ModuSpec’s tools have been piloted with operators on the Norwegian Continental Shelf, receiving positive feedback on usability, transparency and the quality of supporting evidence for regulators.

With DNV Technology Qualification now confirmed, the system is ready for wider deployment by Norwegian operators as regulatory expectations on digital assurance continue to evolve.
