REGULAR 10 QUESTIONS WITH...

In each issue we ask an FM professional the Tomorrow’s FM 10 Questions. This month we spoke to Paul Webb, Learning and Development Lead at Joblogic.

Q1

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST JOB?

Paperboy! The learning curve was unmatched: 5am starts, all weather and all terrain BMX riding with the thrill of being chased by a dog who wasn’t just being friendly. Character building stuff my mum would say!

Q2 Q3 Q4

HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE FACILITIES

MANAGEMENT INDUSTRY?

I left the NHS IT team, where I was teaching software, to join Joblogic and teach customers. It was a natural leap, still helping people use technology better, but in an industry where the variety is endless. One day you’re talking air-con, the next it’s fire safety or drainage. Keeps you on your toes!

HOW DO YOU CHALLENGE THE

STATUS QUO?

At Joblogic, I completely rewrote the approach to learning. I tore up the idea that system learning had to be dull and process-heavy and replaced it with a more human, role-based approach that makes learning stick. My aim is if people are engaged, they’ll remember it. If they remember it, they’ll actually use it.

SINCE YOU STARTED IN FM WHAT HAS

BEEN THE BIGGEST CHANGE THE INDUSTRY HAS SEEN/

YOU HAVE OBSERVED? Technology and compliance have taken giant leaps and rightly so. Ten years ago, paper-based systems and ‘we’ve always done it this way’ thinking were still common. Now, live compliance tracking, mobile job management, AI and integrated workflows are thankfully becoming the norm. It’s gone from being a ‘nice to have’ to a must-have and that’s great for everyone involved.

40 | TOMORROW’S FM Q5

WHO, IN ANY OTHER INDUSTRY,

DO YOU MOST ADMIRE?

I admire anyone who makes something complex feel simple. People like James Dyson, who took a boring household item and completely reinvented it. Or Sundar Pichai, CEO of Google, who helped make powerful tech and AI tools accessible to billions without them feeling like you need a PhD to use them, always using plain English to explain them too. That’s what I try to do with learning here, make it simple, make it stick.

Q6 Q7

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE FILM??

Impossible question! But if I’m put on the spot, Reservoir Dogs. Tarantino’s dialogue is unbeatable, the soundtrack is iconic and it’s a perfect mix of tension, wit and chaos, not unlike a Monday morning in FSM!

IF YOU COULD HOST A DINNER PARTY

WITH THREE GUESTS, DEAD OR ALIVE, WHO WOULD

THEY BE AND WHY? Kurt Cobain: Song writing genius! I’d want to see if he’d be as quietly insightful as I imagine.

Kenny Dalglish: because football needs a bit of dry Scottish humour at the table.

David Attenborough: I could listen to him narrate the passing of the salt and still be in awe.

Q8

ANY ADVICE TO SOMEONE

JUST STARTING OUT IN

THE INDUSTRY? Learn multiple skill sets and embrace technology from day one. The FM world rewards people who can adapt, problem-solve and see the bigger picture. And remember, best practice

10WHICH AREA OF FM

isn’t a buzzword, it’s what helps you scale without losing your sanity.

Q9

WHAT DO YOU THINK IS THE FUTURE

OF THE FM INDUSTRY?

FM will be increasingly data-driven. We’ll see more automated and responsive predictive maintenance, AI-led scheduling and instant compliance reporting. But the human element will be vital, relationships, trust and good communication will never go out of fashion.

BE BEST TRANSFORMED THROUGH TECHNOLOGY?

DO YOU THINK COULD

Asset management, hands down. Nothing winds me up more than bad asset management, especially when the tools to fix it are already here and getting better all the time. The truth is, getting it right is a complete game changer, not just for the business, but for customers too.
