BALANCING PROFIT AND PURPOSE: HOW B-ENGINEERING IS RESHAPING
FACILITIES MANAGEMENT Rob Ditchfield's journey toward a more impactful and responsible business landscape is a testament to the profound influence that visionary organisations can have on individuals and industries alike. As the director of B-engineering, Rob found himself at a pivotal moment during his participation in the Goldman Sachs 10,000 Small Businesses UK programme. It was here that he encountered Belu, a company renowned for its commitment to social responsibility, particularly through its partnership with global water charity, WaterAid. This experience not only opened his eyes to the power of purpose- driven business but also ignited a passionate desire within him to pivot his own business model towards one that prioritises social impact over mere profitability.
The ethos behind Belu’s operations demonstrated that businesses can serve a greater function than generating revenue, which resonated deeply with Rob. He was captivated by the tangible changes that a business could affect within communities and the environment.
This revelation sparked a transformative journey for him, which later led him to discover the B Corp movement.
The principles of the B Corp certification, which emphasises a balanced approach to profit, people, and the planet, struck a chord with Rob’s personal values. He recognised that aligning B-engineering with the B Corp framework would empower it to be a leader in creating ethical practices within the facilities management sector.
Over the next few years, he moulded his company towards the B Corp framework and achieved a significant milestone by securing the certification at the end of 2024. This accomplishment was not merely a badge of honour; it symbolised a robust commitment to responsible business practices and accountability. Rob’s ambition extends beyond certification; he is determined to create a ripple effect within the facilities management industry, advocating for a paradigm shift where businesses adopt a more conscientious and holistic approach to their operations.
Reflecting on his journey, Rob articulates his newfound philosophy with clarity: “I was
inspired to see businesses that operated not just for profit but to genuinely make a difference in the world, it’s important for us all to focus on creating a better future for the next generation.”
This insight underscores the belief that ethical business practices are not just advantageous for society but also cultivate a culture of responsibility and purpose within organisations. By drawing inspiration from Belu’s pioneering example, Rob is resolute in his mission to transform B-engineering into a responsible business, contributing to a sustainable future that benefits both people and the planet.
Rob’s vision for B-engineering is ambitious yet grounded in a deep sense of responsibility. He envisions the company as a catalyst for change, one that champions sustainable solutions and prioritises the well-being of employees, clients, and the broader community. Through his leadership, B-engineering aims to not only excel in its industry but also serve as a model for others to follow, proving that businesses can thrive while having a positive impact on the world.
