Hello and welcome to the August issue of Tomorrow’s FM.
Years ago, I remember reading about something called Moore’s Law. Referring to an observation made by the Co-founder of Intel, Gordon Moore, it was noticed that the number of transistors per square inch on integrated circuits had doubled every year since their invention. The law suggests that this trend will continue well into the 21st century. In simple terms, this means that all computing power becomes much smaller and much faster every year. It goes someway in explaining how we are where we are with technology in 2022, and why we can control every facility in an entire property portfolio from the palm of our hands.

In this month’s issue, we see some of those technologies come into focus for our FM & Technology feature. Semtech looks at the developments in low power, wide area network (LPWAN) technology and how they are making buildings smarter and the lives of facilities managers easier, whilst Service Works Global explores the role technology has to play in the ever-evolving field of space and workplace management.
Elsewhere, for our Leisure & Retail Facilities section, Lanes Group Development Director Richard Leigh, examines why, with climate change seeing camp sites and leisure parks switching from baking sunshine to devastating floods in an instant, drain maintenance is more crucial than ever. Crucially, he argues, careful planning and climate-change risk mitigation is needed to ensure that summer staycation success is sustained in the future.
Finally, Thermosphere, Reco Flooring, Shaw Contract and Setcrete head up our extended look at the Flooring sector, and Business Moves Group shares advice on how workplaces can be designed to support neurodiverse people in our Design & Interiors feature.
Enjoy the read.
