TRAINING & EDUCATION Pathways to Success
How can care providers avoid being caught out and leſt behind by the ever-shiſting tide of social care, asks Grey Matter Learning.
The recruitment and retention challenges facing the social care sector have been widely reported on. But as the sector faces an evolving landscape of demographic, technological and regulatory changes, now is the time to seriously consider how providers can avoid being leſt behind the ever-shiſting tide of the social care sector.
UNDERSTANDING THE EVOLVING
LANDSCAPE As a sector, we are witnessing huge shiſts in demand and expectation. Demographic changes, including an ageing populate and more diverse needs are not only driving an increase in the demand for care but also greater levels of specialisms.
Technological advancements are calling for a workforce who is more tech savvy and able to utilise such technology to drive efficiency and deliver care in a different way that isn’t always in person.
User expectations and requirements are also shiſting, with a growing expectation for greater levels of personalised, user- centric care models that enable more choice and autonomy over care choices for the individual.
And finally, policy and regulatory changes in health and social care, coupled with increased scrutiny through the likes of CQC ratings are driving changes in the sector.
KEY TO UNLOCKING SUCCESS
Building a high-quality pathway for a career in care is a must if the sector is going to meet the shiſting demand and evolving need.
Beyond the basic regulatory level of training and qualifications such as the Care Certificate, providers could also embed the likes of mentoring programmes to help tap into the knowledge and experience of senior personnel and use this to support and inspire those new to the sector.
Online learning is also an incredibly cost effective, flexible, and reliable way to train new and existing care professionals. With the likes of our eLearning, care professionals have access to more than 130 online courses for as little as £3 per month. At a time when time is tight and budgets even tighter, online learning offers a solution to care providers that equips their carers with the knowledge and skills they meet the changing needs of the sector at pace.
The wealth of apprenticeships already on offer within the sector also offers a comprehensive pathway for development to care professionals. Consisting of general and specialist subject matter, an apprenticeship can be studied alongside the carers full-time role over a longer period. Not only does this route offer a comprehensive level of learning, but it can

also be very cost effective with many care providers only having to fund 5% of the course fees.
And for your aspiring leaders? Check out the likes of the Lead to Succeed, Leading Change Improving Care and Well Led leadership programmes that are endorsed by Skills for Care and fundable via the Workforce Development Fund. Jam packed with practical approaches on how to manage an ever-changing care service, and with a focus on person- centered care, these courses can equip your existing and aspiring leaders with the knowledge they need to help shape your approach to care.
No matter which training route you opt for, it’s clear to us that a consistent and clear approach to building a career pathway is key to meeting the evolving needs of the sector. Those providers who do not adapt and seek out new routes to training are likely to be caught out and leſt behind the ever-shiſting tide of social care in the UK.
