SCIE RESPONDS TO THE REVIEW INTO THE OPERATIONAL

EFFECTIVENESS OF THE CQC Kathryn Smith, Chief Executive of the Social Care Institute for Excellence (SCIE), has responded to the findings of the 'Review into the Operational Effectiveness of the Care Quality Commission' published this month.

The independent review, led by Dr Penny Dash, highlights important areas for improvement within the Care Quality Commission (CQC) and across the wider social care sector, including the critical need to bridge gaps in policy around improvement, innovation, commissioning, and patient safety.

Kathryn said: "The review recognises the need for stronger policy in the areas of improvement and innovation. SCIE has long championed the need for evidence-based approaches to driving improvement in care delivery, focusing on ensuring that individuals receive high-quality care that is accessible to all.

“It highlights that current efforts to innovate or improve care services are not operating at the scale needed to meet the challenges facing the sector. SCIE stands ready to help scale efforts and provide comprehensive resources to support providers, commissioners, and policymakers in improving care access and quality.

DEMENTIA SPECIALIST CROWNED BEST FOR HEALTH

AND WELLNESS Not-for-profit care village operator Belong has taken the title for Best Health and Wellness Service at this year’s HealthInvestor Seniors Housing Awards, signifying its best-in-class performance for its revolutionary approach to supporting older people living with dementia.

The national accolade is in recognition of the provider’s holistic approach to care, breaking the mould of the ‘traditional care home’ by promoting an active lifestyle for its residents, apartment tenants, day care and home care customers, with the goal of supporting them to live as independently as possible whilst enjoying later life.

Judges were full of praise for the dementia specialist. They said: "Belong's approach to wellbeing is all about activity, connection and enjoyment – it is not just an add-on [but] feels like a natural part of life in their integrated

villages." They also highlighted the success of its strategy, noting: "Commitment starts at board level and permeates the entire organisation."

Belong’s villages each employ an Experience Team and Exercise Specialist who work alongside care teams to provide a range of opportunities taking advantage of modern and stylish facilities in the care village, including a high-tech gym for older people, an entertainment venue, bistro and lounges. As a not-for- profit care provider, Belong prioritises people and their wellbeing, investing in its environment, arts, music and intergenerational partnerships and

community links to offer a rich programme of events and meaningful occupation.

Belong’s Chief Executive Martin Rix, said: “We are thrilled to be named winner of the sector’s Best Health and Wellness award. Being for people, not profit means our customers and colleagues truly are at the heart of everything we do, and we get to see the remarkable outcomes of our approach to care across all our villages, every day.”

The award win follows Belong’s 2021 accolade for the HealthInvestor Seniors Housing Award for Best Care Provision.

“The review highlights significant issues related to safety issues. Safeguarding vulnerable individuals is at the heart of the social care sector and SCIE’s mission. We look forward to working with Dr Dash as part of her further two reviews on patient safety and quality.

“The public needs confidence in the quality of social care services. SCIE commends the review for shedding light on these crucial issues and looks forward to collaborating with stakeholders across the sector to ensure that the necessary improvements are made. The sector needs a stronger, safer, and more innovative social care system.”
