As we move into winter, JLA infection control specialist Helen Buchan discusses the innovative solutions helping care homes prevent infection spread, reduce illness and meet Regulation 9A guidelines for safer care home visits.


Recognising that quality time with loved ones is essential for residents’ emotional wellbeing, the Care Quality Commission (CQC) has this year introduced Regulation 9A, a new fundamental standard that requires care home managers to facilitate social visits, even during infection outbreaks.


These changes are already making a difference for many families with relatives living in care, especially aſter the prolonged isolation we saw at the height of the pandemic. But as we enter flu season, guaranteed visits can also increase the spread of colds, coughs and other airborne viruses. This is why Regulation 9A guidance also puts so much emphasis on care homes taking proportionate steps to mitigate exposure. And it’s why JLA is currently promoting a suite of infection control solutions that combine to reduce and prevent illness while promoting a safer environment for everybody living, working and dropping in to your home.
