Martin Green (MG):Care homes face unique challenges when it comes to fire safety. Residents oſten have limited mobility or cognitive impairments, which can make evacuations difficult and time-consuming. Also, care homes oſten have complex layouts, are a mix of modern and older buildings, and may house many residents, which can further complicate fire safety planning.

TCare: Given these challenges, what are the essential fire safety measures that care homes should have in place?
MG: A robust fire safety strategy should include several key elements. First, a reliable and up-to-date fire detection system is crucial. This system should be designed to provide early warning of a fire, allowing for timely evacuation of residents. Second, care homes should have well-developed evacuation plans that are practiced regularly. These plans should consider the needs of residents with disabilities and ensure that staff are trained in how to safely evacuate residents in case of a fire. Third, care homes should have regular fire safety training for staff, including training on how to use fire extinguishers and report fires. Finally, care homes should conduct regular fire drills to ensure that staff and residents are familiar with emergency procedures.
