HEALTH & SAFETY A CRITICAL CONCERN
Tomorrow’s Care spoke with Martin Green, Commercial Training and Support Manager at Hochiki Europe, about the specific fire safety risks and challenges faced by care homes and what measures can be put in place to reduce them.
Fire safety is a paramount concern in all buildings, but it takes on even greater significance in care homes. These facilities oſten house vulnerable individuals with limited mobility or cognitive impairments, making them particularly susceptible to the dangers of fire. In the UK, care homes face unique challenges in ensuring the safety of their residents due to factors such as aging infrastructure, complex layouts, and the presence of potentially flammable materials. What advice did Martin Green, Commercial Training and Support Manager at Hochiki Europe, share with us?
Tomorrow’s Care (TCare): What are some of the key challenges care homes face in ensuring the safety of their residents?
Martin Green (MG):Care homes face unique challenges when it comes to fire safety. Residents oſten have limited mobility or cognitive impairments, which can make evacuations difficult and time-consuming. Also, care homes oſten have complex layouts, are a mix of modern and older buildings, and may house many residents, which can further complicate fire safety planning.

TCare: Given these challenges, what are the essential fire safety measures that care homes should have in place?
MG: A robust fire safety strategy should include several key elements. First, a reliable and up-to-date fire detection system is crucial. This system should be designed to provide early warning of a fire, allowing for timely evacuation of residents. Second, care homes should have well-developed evacuation plans that are practiced regularly. These plans should consider the needs of residents with disabilities and ensure that staff are trained in how to safely evacuate residents in case of a fire. Third, care homes should have regular fire safety training for staff, including training on how to use fire extinguishers and report fires. Finally, care homes should conduct regular fire drills to ensure that staff and residents are familiar with emergency procedures.
TCare: Could you elaborate on the importance of a reliable fire detection system for care homes?
MG: A reliable fire detection system is essential for early warning of a fire, which can significantly improve the chances
