Reducing the burden
Tork manufacturer Essity explains how the company is constantly striving to reduce its impact on the environment by doing more with less.
The three ‘R’s of sustainability are universally understood to be: ‘Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle’.
Any company that strives to ensure that its waste products are recycled or reused plays a key role in lowering the burden on landfill sites. However, at Essity, we like to begin at the beginning and focus on the first ‘R’, which means that we constantly seek to reduce the amount of product consumed by the end-user in the first place.
This requires a carefully thought-out approach. In order to reduce the environmental burden on society we need to carry out Life Cycle Assessments and consider the impact of each product at every stage of its life. We can then ascertain how we can do more with less.
For example, Tork dispensers for hand towels, toilet tissue, wiping products and kitchen paper are designed to give out only one sheet of product at a time, which means the user needs to make a conscious decision to take more. This can result in dramatic product savings.
The Tork SmartOne Toilet Paper Dispenser is a good example. This gives out tissue from an aperture at the front of the unit, preventing the user from pulling out more than they need. Tests have shown that the system can reduce consumption up to 40% which means that each roll lasts for up to 98 more visits (based on internal research on 7,729 European users).
The Tork Reflex wiping system – now widely used in the food industry and in catering kitchens – also offers single sheet dispensing, reducing consumption by up to 37% compared with traditional centrefeeds. And our Tork PeakServe Continuous Hand Towel Dispenser not only

offers one-at-a-time dispensing but also houses towels that have been compressed in size by 50%. This means more can be accommodated inside the dispenser and the handling, transport and storage burden is reduced.
We also offer products that reduce consumption in other ways. For example, the Tork Heavy-Duty Cleaning Cloth is designed for carrying out industrial cleaning tasks that often involve the use of solvents. However, many sustainable businesses are striving to reduce their solvent usage since these pollute the atmosphere and have been associated with health issues, such as breathing disorders and skin conditions.
Due to its excellent absorption and releasing properties, the Heavy-Duty Cleaning Cloth is capable of reducing solvent usage by up to 40% compared with traditional wiping cloths.
Our ‘Reduce’ ethos also extends to our packaging: Tork Easy Handling packaging has been designed to generate the minimum amount of waste. Tork Carry Packs generate a small amount of recyclable waste while Tork Carry Boxes are compact units that fold completely flat when empty. They also have integral handles which allow the cleaner to take several flattened boxes at a time to the recycling facility.
Reducing the end-user’s product consumption requires commitment, strategic thinking and dedication to the sustainability cause. Sustainability is at the heart of all our innovations and we will continue to work towards our goal of helping people to create a more sustainable life when they are away from home.
