Green with envy

Here, Berry discusses the cleaning solutions that are powerful, effective, and won’t wipe out the world.

Similar solutions are now available for floorcare. Traditional string mops tend to move dirt and bacteria around on the surface rather than removing it altogether, increasing the danger of cross-contamination. Chemicals are likely to be required in an attempt to wipe out bacteria, along with significant amounts of water.

However, more sustainable choices are available. Disposable microfibre mops, such as the range produced by Chicopee, pick up and trap microbes then are simply discarded after use. This not only reduces the amount of water and detergent required to clean a floor but it eradicates the danger of cross-contamination.

The ultimate green clean

Sustainable is a buzzword for many sectors. Whereas businesses at one time would claim to be ‘green’, this has extended to embrace many diverse elements, from cleaning solutions to the materials themselves.

And as cleaning materials evolve, facility managers find themselves with a greater choice than ever at their fingertips. No longer is the ‘green’ product desirable only for its sustainable qualities; now many such cloths and wipes are able to match or surpass the cleaning powers of traditional materials.

Somewhat surprisingly, some of the most environmentally friendly materials are in fact disposable. Reusable cloths require frequent laundry, which in turn often uses large quantities of water and detergents.

Even after laundering, studies have discovered that up to 93% of microfibre cloths retained high levels of potentially dangerous bacteria such as E.Coli. Additionally, traditional cloths were shown to transfer around one third of bacteria onto the next surface to be cleaned.

One solution to the problem of cross-contamination is to use a high quality disposable microfibre cloth. For example, in biolab tests conducted by Dr. A. Summerfield and Dr. Richard Hastings in June 2014, the Microfibre Light from Chicopee – a brand of Berry – removed 99.99% of bacteria from a surface, transferring 0% to the next area to be cleaned. The cloth is disposed of after use, eradicating the danger of bacteria being spread.

Crucially, chemicals are not required as the fibres of the cloth are able to pick up and trap dirt, dust and bacteria, where it remains until it is discarded.

20 | WHAT’S NEW?

The J-Cloth Plus Biodegradable from Chicopee is the ultimate eco-friendly wipe. As the name suggests, the wipe is both fully biodegradable and compostable, meeting all relevant DIN standards and carrying the seedling logo, granted by DIN-Certco, as proof of its green credentials.

The J-Cloth Plus Biodegradable has been independently tested by ISEGA and is fully compliant with European regulations (number 1935/2004), meaning it is completely safe to come into direct contact with food.

Low quality disposable foodservice cloths are difficult to rinse thoroughly and keep clean, allowing odours to develop. This results in a high turnover rate, which in turn contributes to an increased amount of waste going to landfill.

The J-Cloth Plus Biodegradable is made from carefully selected raw materials, with an open, wavy texture based on that of the world’s most renowned cleaning wipe, the J-Cloth. This enables it to pick up dirt effectively, while remaining easy to rinse and therefore staying fresh for longer. After use, it can be simply rinsed then disposed of in your food waste bin, ready for collection with recycling, reducing landfill costs.

The wipe is both fully biodegradable and compostable. Biodegradable means it will break down into carbon dioxide, water and bio mass within a reasonable amount of time, whereas compostable products are not only biodegradable but when they break down, release valuable nutrients into the soil, helping plants and trees to grow.

In addition to having full food contact clearance, the J-Cloth Plus Biodegradable is PEFC certified, to promote sustainable forest development.
