Bio-chemical revolution

Creating truly sustainable solutions means moving away from tradition, says Genesis Biosciences.

When it comes to cleaning products used by contractors in the facilities management industry a low price generally comes first, but why do other considerations, like high cleaning performance or the environment, have to come second?

That belief underpins the research and development behind our company, Genesis Biosciences. We are using biology and modern chemistry, rather than traditional chemicals, to radically change the facilities management industry with our eco-benign probiotic technology.

We have spent over £2.5m on research and development, and are a world leader in the development of microbial and antimicrobial cleaning products that contain natural active substances, and beneficial bacteria in order to create high-performing, yet environmentally positive solutions for customers.

Dr. Phil Caunt, Research and Development Specialist at Genesis Biosciences, said: “Traditional chemical cleaners are flawed by design. They’re developed to offer some immediate cleaning benefits at a very low price, but the low price point means that once diluted the product is only minimally effective and requires either frequent cleaning or a lot of labour to get the desired results.

“On the other hand, you have some quite hazardous products and when you consider the long-term damage those products cause when applied on surfaces, the danger they pose to employees, and the impact they can have on the wider environment, the products are actually very costly for companies. You only have to look on the labelling of these products to see just how dangerous they are.”

“Eco-benign technology means we are looking to develop chemistry that works with biology, not against it, while achieving maximal cleaning efficacy. When we look at modern chemical ingredients for the programme we consider environmental concerns such as biodegradability, toxicity, and the behaviour of the material in the environment.

“In short, we’re looking to find the modern chemistry that can be combined with our beneficial bacteria strains that allow us to meet the needs of the facilities management industry, improving long-term cleaning performance, reducing labour and replacing the use of more dangerous chemicals.”

Behind the development of the eco-benign technology are rigorous testing protocols that see Genesis Biosciences’ scientists screen the degradation capability of their Bacillus strains against multiple standard soils and combine with modern environmentally responsible chemistry to develop high performing, application-specific formulas to meet specific client needs.

The result of this testing is unique cleaning technology that outperforms chemical cleaning products and delivers sustainable long-term results.

Dr. Caunt continued: “All of the bacteria we need to develop our application-specific products are out there, and we have invested millions of pounds into our research and development to find them. We now know that not all bacteria are created equal and that’s why we look for exactly the right strains of Bacillus that deliver long-term results for clients.

“Our eco-benign technology means that our products are targeted by design: we’re not throwing Bacillus strains and any old chemistry together and hoping for a good result, we have rigorously tested each and every one of our formulas through a stringent process so we can be confident our products will thrive in the area of application and be effective against organic material long after application.

“By using the very latest chemistry and not harsh chemicals to meet client needs, eco-benign technology delivers incredible performance, long-term cost savings, improves end-user safety, and ultimately has minimal negative impact on the wider environment.”
