A healthy renewal
A spa receives a special sustainability certificate from Bona for renewing, rather replacing, their flooring.
A spa has been awarded the Bona sustainability certificate, in recognition of how much CO2
and energy it has saved as
a result of having its floors renewed instead of replaced with a brand new installation.
Completed in a matter of days while the facility remained open, the renewal project led to around 90% less use of materials. It also prevented an enormous 10,260kg of carbon dioxide from being emitted into the environment, and saved 180,000 megajoules of energy.
The thermal baths, in the popular ski resort of Bad Hofgastein in Austria, renewed 1,000m2
of linoleum flooring
which was more than 20 years old. It had become unsightly, neglected and could no longer be cleaned or maintained effectively. The wear layer of the flooring’s surface began to develop hairline cracks, allowing moisture and bacteria to penetrate. Additionally, the surface had become dull and stained, rendering cleaning agents ineffective.
To preserve the tranquil design of the spa, the Bona Resilient System was used to renew and upgrade its resilient floor and to secure substantial cost, downtime and environmental savings.
Bona is well-recognised as an environmentally-conscious, global innovator of sustainable products and systems. The organisation drives much development in research, education, knowledge-sharing and, for more than 100 years, has worked to innovate products and solutions that minimise our impact on the environment whilst also minimising the impact on those who use its solutions.
As well as the clear environmental benefits, renewing an existing floor surface can deliver a healthier and more hygienic floor. Bona’s Resilient System has allowed the

maintenance of the floor’s freshness and hygiene, whilst also totally transforming the floor back to its former beauty; for a better, longer-lasting, healthier surface.
The freshly renewed floor is also now much easier to clean and does not require a constant cycle of stripping and polishing.
Klaus Lemmerer, Managing Director at Alpentherme Gastein, said: “I am thrilled to share my experience with the Bona Resilient Solution. The floor renewal process was seamless and extremely efficient, allowing us to keep the facility up and running during the renovation period.
“Additionally, we were able to completely customise the floor at Alpentherme Gastein in Bad Hofgastein to fit our exact needs – thanks to the expansive design options offered by Bona. Not only did Max Walzl, the Bona Certified Craftsman, offer us great value for money, but we also saved CO2
and energy
costs due to the floor renewal rather than a floor replacement. Considering all these benefits, I highly recommend everyone choose Bona for their next flooring project.”
Fourth-generation, family-owned Bona has built a heritage around the environment and sustainability, embedded into its culture since 1919. Importantly, Bona has also pioneered many important innovations in the flooring industry worldwide – the renewal of resilient flooring is just one of those innovations.
In times of tight budgets and growing climate concern, renewing resilient flooring has a positive impact on organisations. In fact, thousands of tons of CO2
can be
saved by renewing old floor coverings across industries. For more information, visit the website below.
