The Tork Coreless Toilet Roll system offers further sustainability benefits because the compact roll – which lasts up to five times longer than conventional toilet rolls – also results in 88% less waste in the form of toilet roll cores.
Today’s washroom dispensers are increasingly being manufactured to be long-lasting and durable in a bid to reduce their carbon footprint, but at Essity we have taken this ethos a dramatic step further and have completely offset the carbon emissions of some of our core washroom dispensers.
We now use certified renewable electricity during the production of many of our dispensers, and we offset the remaining carbon emissions by means of investments in certified climate projects. These projects include the supply of clean drinking water to Cambodia; the provision of energy-efficient cooking stoves to India, and the undertaking of forest-protection activities in Indonesia.
A total of 27 Tork washroom dispensers including the Tork SmartOne Toilet Paper Dispenser, the Tork PeakServe Continuous Hand Towel Dispenser, the Tork Coreless Midsize toilet paper system and Tork soap dispensers have now been certified as carbon neutral. This means that customers can now equip their entire washroom with Tork carbon neutral dispensers.
Essity also makes recommendations on which products to use in Tork carbon neutral certified dispensers for maximum sustainability. Signage declaring the carbon neutral status of the dispensers are also available for customers who are keen to communicate their sustainability credentials.

The process of hand drying always creates sustainability issues, whether it’s due to the use of energy for hand drying, the laundering of textile towels or because paper towels are thrown away after use. For this reason, Essity has launched the world’s first recycling service for paper towels.
Customers signing up for Tork PaperCircle have their used washroom hand towels picked up from their business premises and taken to local recycling centres, where they are turned into other tissue products. Tork PaperCircle is available in several European countries, where it is enabling a total reduction of environmental footprint of 40% compared with current waste handling options.
There are a number of other ways in which companies can minimise their impact on the environment in the washroom. For example, Essity has invested in technology to make tissue fibre from renewable wheat straw at its mill in Mannheim, Germany.
Wheat straw is the product left behind after the wheat harvest has been gathered in, and around half of the world’s supply has historically gone to waste. Essity now adds wheat straw pulp to some of its consumer and professional hygiene products, in a bid to reduce the company’s environmental impact.
