FEATURE

saving you time and money and reducing the chemical footprint across the workplace. They many even work in ambient water temperature, making them even safer and cost-effective to use.

How natural cleaning solutions work

As mentioned, Bioshield use leftover orange pith and peel as the foundation of our natural cleaning solutions. We then add in natural bioflavonoids and organic acids to create effective cleaners that also have natural antibacterial and antifungal properties.

This combination produces natural enzymes which work to enhance the cleaning qualities of a product by effectively and efficiently breaking down proteins, fats and starches.

Using the right biological products can be just as effective – and quite often, more effective – than traditional chemical- based products. Not only are they just as effective, they have the added bonus of being more environmentally friendly, too.

Circular economy in action

While natural cleaning solutions tend to be better for the environment than traditional synthetic cleaners, they still have an environmental impact. All crops have a carbon footprint as well as a physical footprint – and with some crops, there’s a real risk of negative impact to both people and planet, in terms of deforestation, destruction of habitat and displacement of people.

The circular economy is one of the key principles at Bioshield. By repurposing waste materials, we’re truly making the most of the natural world’s resources. This not only dramatically reduces our environmental impact, it also demonstrates what’s possible in the cleaning industry, setting a precedent for others to follow.

By using waste products from oranges, we’re already streamlining our resource use: we don’t need to grow any more oranges for our product, using up valuable land, water and energy resources.

We simply use a byproduct of another industry that would otherwise be going to waste. Green cleaning products that are

part of a truly circular economy are surely a beacon of hope in a world dogged by overproduction and overconsumption.

Water runoff

There are several concerns when using traditional cleaning solutions, with water runoff perhaps one of the most dangerous. Traditional cleaners often use chemicals like chlorine and ammonia. While they’re highly effective cleaning agents, they’re a significant contributor to water pollution, causing damage to delicate aquatic ecosystems thanks to water runoff.

Water runoff can drain into the sewer system and back into waterways. Traditional cleaners can contain phosphorus and nitrogen, which can put excess nutrients into the aquatic environment. This can create algal blooms, which can be harmful to coral reefs and coastal ecosystems. Other chemical cleaners can directly damage fish tissue or, due to chemicals that can’t be broken down, they can linger in the environment and become part of our food chain when we eat them.

In contrast, natural cleaning solutions are biodegradable, leaving no harmful waste or wastewater that requires additional treatment.

A greener future

With many cleaning businesses deciding that sustainable solutions are increasingly a necessity, rather than a luxury, products that harness waste materials to create a natural cleaning solution that’s effective and environmentally friendly are leading the way.

Natural cleaning solutions like Bioshield’s are not only as effective as traditional cleaning products, but by using natural waste products, they reduce a business’s carbon footprint and save valuable resources.

By choosing natural cleaning solutions, you’re also preventing traditional cleaning chemicals like ammonia and chlorine from entering the ecosystem, helping preserve ecosystems across the world and creating a much safer cleaning environment.
