A fresh take on washroom odour management

With Halloween, Bonfire Night and Christmas almost upon us, bars, pubs and restaurants are preparing to be busier than ever. Spikes in footfall bring surges in hygiene challenges – especially in washrooms. Cleanliness is vital, and a few bad reviews can be reputation-destroying.
For cleaning professionals, maintaining high hygiene standards is an ongoing challenge, especially in washrooms, where odours and airborne germs are persistent. Tackling the source of unpleasant odours and minimising the spread of germs in these areas can be difficult, even with regular cleaning.
Despite washrooms looking clean, they can still be affected by foul odours caused by airborne bacteria, hidden bacteria or poor drainage. Overcoming these issues requires an advanced solution.
The public bathroom fear
Nobody enjoys using public washrooms that smell bad. Eight out of 10 would avoid using a public toilet unless absolutely necessary, with overpowering odours ranking as the second most common complaint (60%) behind unflushed toilets (71%).
Despite this aversion, 92% of people have encountered unpleasant odours in public toilets, presenting a serious issue. Foul-smelling washrooms can trigger many negative responses which can impact businesses.
One immediate consequence is encouraging unhygienic behaviour. 34% of individuals admit they’d be more likely to leave a washroom dirty if they already perceive it as unclean. 88% try to exit a smelly washroom as quickly as possible, with over a quarter admitting they might skip washing and drying their hands to leave sooner.
Addressing washroom odours is therefore essential for improving overall facility hygiene. It’s also key to ensuring customers have a positive experience, fondly remember the business and are motivated to return. Research shows over three quarters of consumers leave with a negative impression of businesses with unpleasant washroom odours, and 46% say they wouldn’t return to establishments with foul-smelling washrooms.
Winning the war on washroom odours
Regular cleaning routines are helpful, but in busy washrooms, odours can quickly become overwhelming. To truly prevent odours from building up, facilities managers need solutions that work continuously, something traditional methods often can’t provide. That’s where innovative systems come in.
Precision systems
