REGULAR An update from the Institute
Neil Spencer-Cook, Group Managing Director at the British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc), lets us know what they have been working on recently.
Over the past few months, BICSc has been a hive of activity, pushing forward its mission to protect the cleaning operative, elevate standards, foster professional development and champion best practices in the cleaning industry. From training updates and initiatives to industry collaboration, BICSc
continues to play a transformative role in shaping the cleaning sector.
One of the most notable trends at BICSc in recent weeks has been its continued embrace of technology. The Institute has introduced new digital tools aimed at streamlining membership management and enhancing the delivery of training. The updates to the online portal have made it easier for members to access training, purchase courses and track their professional development. This move has been particularly timely, responding to the evolving needs of an industry increasingly reliant on remote learning and virtual collaboration.
BICSc has also hosted a webinar featuring experts in cleaning. Topics ranged from the latest in sustainable cleaning products to advancements in automation. The session not only provided valuable insights, but also facilitated networking among professionals eager to stay ahead of industry trends.
A core element of BICSc activities is its robust suite of training programmes and certification pathways. In the last few months, the Institute has rolled out refreshed course content, reflecting added inclusivity and emerging best practices. Face-to-face training has continued in several regions, allowing operatives to gain hands-on experience under the guidance of seasoned trainers.
The Institute’s flagship Cleaning Professional’s Skills Suite (CPSS) has seen an uptick in enrolments, with tailored modules now available for training in multiple skills in one go, as well as specialisms in areas such as healthcare. Feedback from participants has been overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the focus on both technical skills and soft skills such as communication and leadership.
All of the Accredited Training Members out there have been very busy, and we’ve seen a large increase in assessments being submitted by our assessors – this is great to see, and testament to how important professional training is in the sector.
Recognition remains at the heart of BICSc’s ethos. The past two months has seen two BICSc team members achieve level 5 apprenticeships. The next few months will see a number of award ceremonies that celebrate outstanding contributions to the cleaning industry. The BICSc Awards will be held at Whittlebury Hall in September, and will honour organisations and individuals who demonstrate innovation, commitment and excellence in all things BICSc.
BICSc’s own social media channels have been abuzz, keeping you all up to date with all things BICSc, and it’s great to see your comments.
Collaboration has also been a key theme. The Institute has strengthened ties with other institutions: launching schemes that assist students in gaining the required skills for the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners’ (WCEC) Chartered Practitioner award; the results for the Future of Cleaning Initiative have been published in collaboration with the Cleaning & Support Services Association (CSSA); and we have started a new relationship with the British Damage Management Association (BDMA). These initiatives aim to attract fresh talent and challenge perceptions of the industry.
As BICSc continues to evolve, the momentum of the past two months is expected to carry forward. With strategic investments in technology, continued expansion of training and a strong focus on collaboration and wellbeing, the Institute is well-positioned to influence the future of the cleaning industry. BICSc’s commitment to raising standards and celebrating excellence is evident in every facet of its work – a testament to its enduring legacy and vision.
