Auditing: the key to clean and healthy workspaces

Ben Elmadi, Technical Manager at MSL Solution Providers, explains why audits are important for ensuring workspace hygiene standards.

The importance of regular and effective cleaning cannot be understated. It is implemented in practically every type of industry, from education and healthcare settings to hospitality and office environments, to name but a few. Although its crucial role in protecting the wellbeing of individuals and communities is widely recognised, not all organisations audit or understand the value of performing them.

It promotes better health

Whilst cleaning minimises the risk of germ transmission, auditing enables organisations to monitor and understand exactly what is and isn’t being cleaned effectively. By monitoring and measuring, any potential problems can be identified – and rectified – at an early stage. For example, missed areas can be added to a cleaning schedule. This, in turn, prevents the spread of infection and helps to create a healthier setting for all occupants of the building.

It offers peace of mind

Cleaning audits provide reassurance that the cleaning undertaken is high-quality, effective and meets expected standards. What’s more, by providing a solid and measurable foundation to promoting a more hygienic and safer environment, a business can enhance its reputation, highlighting that it takes the health and safety of its staff, clients, and visitors seriously.

A robust return on investment

Auditing gives businesses a great insight on how their budget is being spent and how well cleaning is actually being performed. This offers the opportunity for continued enhancements, learning and development, resulting in the most effective clean. Furthermore, investing in auditing can help save money. By detecting potential problems early on, organisations can take steps to resolve them before they become bigger, costlier and more stressful issues.

Raising the bar

Ultimately, auditing raises standards. Regular inspections help to monitor performance and identify areas for

improvement, thus maintaining or increasing the quality of cleaning. In certain environments, such as hospitals and healthcare facilities, it is essential for regulatory compliance too. In other shared settings, such as office environments or retail units, auditing is not mandatory, but is recommended to ensure that premises are kept clean and healthy. After all, even with a stringent cleaning regime, there are hidden germ hotspots that can be easily missed. For example, lift buttons, backs of chairs and kettle handles in communal kitchens can all harbour bacteria.

The frequency of auditing will depend on the size and bespoke needs of the setting too. However, to maintain a high standard of cleanliness, it is advised to perform an audit at least once every quarter.

At your fingertips

Performing cleaning audits is now easier than ever, thanks to the innovative CleanSure Hygiene Auditing Solution by MSL Solution Providers. Using our vast microbiology and industrial hygiene experience, this service helps organisations check that the cleaning procedures in their workplaces follow best practice and that they're robustly audited.

Once their specific needs have been determined, businesses simply need to swab surfaces around their workplace and can then have them microbiologically tested by post quickly, reliably and effectively. We also offer a variety of auditing solutions to support our clients in passing hygiene-based and GMP (Good Hygiene and Manufacturing Practices) audits.

Keeping workplaces clean and hygienic is more important than ever. Auditing provides an additional layer of reassurance that shared environments are hygienically clean and safe, and that correct cleaning protocols are not only being followed, but constantly refined and improved for the highest quality clean possible. The result? Enhanced wellbeing of all occupants, lower levels of absence due to sickness and a more productive workspace.
