WASHROOM HYGIENE

Keeping a lid on washroom costs

With hygiene, cost control and the visitor experience all important elements to consider in the washroom, Paul Mulready, Marketing Manager at Northwood Hygiene Products, talks about how your choice of dispensers and disposables in the washroom can make a difference.

The cost-of-living crisis continues, with retail spending falling dramatically and the government handing out more cost-of-living payments to the poorest households. Many businesses are struggling too, with high energy prices, supply chain issues and inflation still high, despite a fall. Every washroom facility needs to make savings where they can, but this can be challenging when they need to be kept in service all the time.

Washrooms can be expensive to operate with maintenance teams needing to be on hand to keep them hygienic and tidy. They also need a constant supply of soap and paper to cater for visitors, and then there’s the energy needed to heat and light the spaces. It all adds up. So how can providers keep costs down and cleanliness up?

Go high capacity

High-capacity washroom dispensers that can hold more paper and disposables deliver better value and help to save on labour costs, because they minimise the need for staff to visit frequently to top up supplies that have run out.

Curtail waste

Consumables like soap, toilet paper and hand towels get used surprisingly quickly, so it’s vital to control the amount of product dispensed. Soap that’s dispensed in a measured shot, for example, discourages overuse and prevents mess in the washroom, which then needs to be cleaned up.

Pick the right dispenser

The wrong type of towel dispenser can significantly add to costs. C-fold dispensers, for instance, make it tricky for the visitor to take just one towel, meaning that they may pull out a handful of towels that aren’t needed. Z-fold towels, which are designed to dispense one at a time, are less wasteful. High-capacity roll towels are also a good option for high- footfall washrooms.

Optimise maintenance time To reduce staff costs, maintenance teams need to be able

to top up and wipe down dispensers quickly. Units with refill indicators that allow staff to see how much product is left are helpful, as are ones that are streamlined in design to make cleaning them simple. Furthermore, units that can be opened with a universal key are more convenient.

Choose durable units

Robust dispensers will withstand constant use, offering better value than ones that need constantly replacing. Lockable units will prevent pilferage and minimise the expense of replacing stolen consumables.

Hygiene heroes

Solutions like the North Shore premium proprietary system of washroom dispensers and consumables from Northwood can help providers save time and money in the washroom. Providing zero waste and volume in use, the high-capacity North Shore range is both economical and practical.

There are three wipe-clean hand towel dispensers and a choice of hand towels, plus a selection of toilet tissue and soap dispensers and consumables in the range – all of which have been designed to curtail waste and overuse, therefore reducing costs.

Ensuring 100% of the paper is used, both the 5,000-sheet capacity Orbit and the 2,500-sheet capacity Side-by-Side toilet roll dispensers prevent ‘free rolling’ and only allow access to the next roll once the current one has been used.

The hand towel dispensers include a high-capacity mechanical hands-free roll towel dispenser, a sensor- operated hybrid roll towel dispenser and a folded towel dispenser, which dispenses sheets one at a time to prevent overuse. The dispensers have inspection windows so staff don’t need to waste time opening them to check stock levels and they are quick and easy to refill, helping to save time and money.

Product and running costs may be rising, but it doesn’t mean the washroom has to compromise. The right choice of dispensers, paper and disposables can make all the difference.
