Northwood businesses, which should give us more insight and allow us to strategise our Net Zero plan more effectively.

How do you measure your

environmental impact? As a vertically integrated manufacturer, the way we look after our waste management is an important benchmark that sets us apart from others in the industry.

We recycle all the paper waste we produce and 94% of our operational waste is recycled closed loop through our mills. Just 0.3% of our waste is sent to landfill, and we continue to push this to the lowest possible levels.

How do you compare against your

competitors? We have a Great British story to tell and we’re proud to be one of a handful of companies in the UK that is fully vertically integrated, meaning we control the whole of our paper supply chain.

As a true UK manufacturer with a domestic supply chain, we’re focused on a full circle economy. This means that we are involved throughout the supply chain – raw material supply, manufacturing, end user product converting, storage and transportation.

By minimising the import of products from overseas and not transporting raw materials or products unnecessarily in the UK, we’re able to significantly reduce the number of miles goods must travel, which helps our Net Zero strategy.

How do you embed sustainability

within your people? We take our commitment to sustainability really seriously and this filters down to Northwood Hygiene’s team of 340 people.

We have cross-functional teams who steer us on elements, such as carbon and waste, and we are developing a cultural programme where sustainability will become the backbone of our business. We want to cultivate sustainability champions and encourage everyone to be mindful of their impact on the environment, both as individuals and as part of our operation.

Are your customers demanding more

sustainable products? Yes, they are. In the past, sustainability and hygiene have been considered as non-compatible, but there are now hygiene solutions available that can really contribute to sustainability.

Our Whisper Eco product is one of them, as is our Raphael www.tomorrowscleaning.com

proprietary washroom range, which combines strong environmental benefits with superior hygiene. Developed to cater for any washroom environment, whether it’s large, small, high or low footfall, Raphael delivers improved washroom hygiene standards, whilst also saving money and reducing waste.

Our ‘Green Loop’ closed loop end of life plastic recycling solution has also been very successful, with more than 150 users now on board. Customers can simply remove the plastic inserts from the cardboard core when a roll is finished and drop it into a dedicated recycling bin before being returned to Northwood. The plastic inserts are then recycled to make new raw material which can be used for future inserts.

How are you helping customers to be

more sustainable? Customers increasingly demand sustainable partners and, at Northwood, we’re doing what we can to ensure that every element of our operation supports their environmental ambitions.

We offer a consultancy service for customers where we can advise on how they can make savings in lots of areas, from consumption and packaging waste to transport and labour – all of which can improve their sustainable credentials.

We can also create materials for customers to celebrate their FSC certification, and these can be prominently displayed at their premises to show they are making progress. Additionally, we can help new customers meet their waste reduction targets by removing their old dispensers and recycling and disposing of them responsibly when they sign up for our Raphael dispensers.

We also partner with Trees for Cities, and pledge to donate one tree for every qualifying Raphael contract received, which has really resonated with our customer base.

You published your first environmental report recently – what has the

feedback been? We’ve had a really positive reaction from customers on this – they like to see that we can prove we are making good progress as a business and for them too. Most of all, we’re proud to doing our bit to lighten our footprint, lead the way in our field and meet climate goals, and our customers applaud that.
