A busy start to 2024

Neil Spencer-Cook, Group MD of The British Institute of Cleaning Science (BICSc), explains how busy the institute has been since the new year.

We’re well into the swing of 2024, and time is flying by.

We held our first webinar of the year and with registrations to attend at full capacity, it appears to have gone down positively and is now available to view on the website. Hopefully, we were successful in our objective to let you know how BICSc

is evolving.

Be sure to register for the next one, ‘Audit with knowledge – Results with meaning’. It takes place 30 May 2024, so visit the website and get in early. We’ve increased capacity to give you more chance to register.

You may have noticed recently that we’re working in collaboration with the CSSA on a new initiative – The Future of Cleaning. We’re all very excited to see the results of this study, and I was even interviewed for a news piece by Greatest Hits Radio.

We’ve also been celebrating with Kelsey Hargreaves, who became the youngest Chartered Practitioner to date in early February with the Worshipful Company of Environmental Cleaners (WCEC).

This year is proving to be busy on the training front. There seems to be an increased interest in ensuring cleaning operatives are fully trained, something that we here at BICSc are passionate about. It is after all the start of our mission statement – protecting the operative. A trained operative is more protected than an untrained one.

This year’s BICSc Awards will be slightly different, having tweaked the awards that we’re presenting. To bring the Awards more in line with the areas the industry is focusing on, we have three new awards covering innovation, ESG and youth employment, but they haven’t replaced any of the key awards you’ll be familiar with. All the awards are now listed on the website, so please have a look at what you think you would like to apply for, or make somebody else’s day

by nominating them. We will open the applications in early March. Thanks to all those that have already signed up to sponsor – also, there are still sponsorship opportunities available if this is something you would like to do.

We should have two new courses available on our virtual training suite soon, a free course covering environmental considerations for the industry, an awareness update for those that need it, and ‘An Auditor’s Guide to the NHS Efficacy and Technical Cleaning Audits’ for those of you involved in NHS audits. This course is a great addition to our Cleanlogic course range and will work well with our existing ‘The Theory of Cleaning Inspections’ course. There’s more in the pipeline, and we’ll update you when they’re close to completion.

You may notice our courses start to look a little different over the coming months. We’ve been looking at how we can improve them to be as inclusive as possible and after some training, in particular around neurodiversity for one of the development team, in addition to reviewing (and updating where necessary) the content to ensure it is relevant to today’s industry, we are making some changes to the look and feel. We’ll be introducing more videos, and all videos will have the ability to play closed captions, too. The backgrounds, font size, colours and designs will be become more friendly and easier to read for all. Please bear with us while we work on all of these, as some of the changes are not easy and we aren’t a massive team, but we are keen to get the changes out there as soon as is practical.

As you can see, we’re busy working in the background for you all and this isn’t everything we’re doing. The international market is growing, and we’re working in a number of ministries in the Middle East to get BICSc mandated – it’s a shame our ministries in the UK will not engage with us to do something similar.

I’ll leave it there, and I look forward to talking to you all about the next BICSc update in a couple of months.
